Scrap that four-over spell plan for Wood. The Durham man will continue into his fifth in a row.

Colin de Grandhomme is a very languid striker of the ball. He likes to play his strokes. He has a simple stance, he watches the ball and he plays his shots.

Anderson isn't giving De Grandhomme any short balls to tuck into as he whips a couple of pearlers pas the outside edge. A maiden.

R: How many other Test sides would have a team 36-5 and decide to stick four men on the fence and dig it in half way down? Target the stumps.

The Void: Vic thinks Vince will bowl... ahead of Root or Malan?!

Vince has 22 first-class wickets, but has bowled one over for England on four occasions for combined figures of 4-1-13-0.

  5. NZ 62-5published at 25 overs

After a check-up, Watling is fine to continue and successful fends off another Wood bumper to finish.

That extra bit of padding that helmets have had since the Phil Hughes incident has come off, but not hit the stumps. They'll check him over - there's a procedure to go through now.

    NZ 62-5published at 24.5 overs

Wood goes round the wicket to send down some more chin music to Watling, who has looked unsure against the short ball.

And he's hit him. A nasty riser from Wood on the angle and Watling is late in deciding to duck, the ball clattering into the side of his helmet.

The protective padding flies off the back and just about misses the stumps. Out come the Kiwi physios.

If they stick to Wood's "three or four overs, as quick as you can" spells, he's only going to bowl one more. So if the other end is Broad and Anderson's preferred end, they've got to bowl Leach, Vince or Stokes next.

  9. NZ 58-5published at 24 overs

Another tight over from Anderson, just two from it as De Grandhomme clips off his legs through backward square.

The lack of a scoreboard irks me, because it's one of the most important things you need at a cricket ground. You look around, and all you see is a TV replay.

Vic Marks adds: Lord's has a small manual scoreboard in addition to the big screens, so you can always see the score - even if the power fails.

    De Grandhomme 20, Watling 7

De Grandhomme is happy to take on every short ball, picking up another.

Watling is not so keen at all, just about ducking under a couple of bumpers.

It wasn't a catch - Broad did well to save the boundary but he couldn't save his sunglasses!

That reminded me of Devon Malcolm in Jamaica in 1990 - not when he ran out Gordon Greenidge. The ball was pulled to long leg, Devon stopped the ball, his glasses came off and he chose to retrieve his glasses before he retrieved the ball!

  13. NZ 55-5published at 22.2 overs

De Grandhomme pulls again and the ball flies towards Stuart Broad at fine leg.

It falls just short and Broad does well to save the boundary in the end, only to lose the lens on his sunglasses for his efforts.

  14. NZ 53-5published at 22.1 overs

Wood goes short to De Grandhomme but it's a much better line this time and the big all-rounder swipes and misses.

Jonny Bairstow is briefly interested behind the stumps. Did he get a touch on that? England decide against a review.

It's an interesting conundrum for Root, because in recent times England have always had four [seam] bowlers, plus Moeen. Here, without Stokes bowling, they've got three bowlers plus Leach.

We'll know Stokes isn't going to bowl if James Vince comes on - he's been spotted loosening up. He bowls little seamers, slower than De Grandhomme, but he doesn't even really bowl much for Hampshire.

  16. NZ 53-5published at 22 overs

De Grandhomme clips square for one and Anderson sends down another five tight deliveries at Watling, all dot balls.

David Langley: I reckon David Warner will eventually reveal more in a big TV interview once all the legal stuff is done, like the Lance Armstrong reveal with Oprah. Although it's more likely to be Mark Nicholas asking the questions than Oprah this time.

Rob Owens: David Warner. Lovely chap. Tears available at will. Available for an am-dram performance near you soon.

  18. NZ 52-5published at 21 overs

Shot! Wood digs it in short and De Grandhomme swivels a pull shot for four.

And again! This time the ball zips in front of square to the fence.

And again! De Grandhomme leathers another pull through mid-wicket for his third four of the over. That's the 50 up for New Zealand.
