Broad sends down a short one at De Grandhomme, who swivels it round the corner for four to move onto 48.

A similar ball and a similar shot goes to the fielder this time and the all-rounder takes the single.

Ste Hoare: Jack Leach giving his captain control from one end. No England spinner has been able to do this since Swann’s retirement.

  3. NZ 106-5published at 41 overs

Leach tries to find that sharp turns just outside De Grandhomme's off stump.

No bite this over though as New Zealand take five from it.

  4. NZ 101-5published at 40 overs

    De Grandhomme 40, Watling 31

Broad is back over the wicket to Watling, with third slip in very close.

The Kiwi keeper covers up and defends the rest of the over.

  5. ouch!

    NZ 101-5published at 39.2 overs

De Grandhomme takes on the hook and Broad's short ball strikes him in the helmet and flies off to third man for a leg bye.

The New Zealander is fine to continue.

Stuart Broad is going to come round the wicket to Colin de Grandhomme, with three men out on the hook.

    Short stuff coming...

  7. NZ 100-5published at 39 overs

    Trail by 207

De Grandhomme cracks it out to the sweeper in the deep for one.

Watling then shapes to sweep the last and gets enough on it to tickle the ball fine for four.

That's the 100 up for the hosts as they continue a solid rebuilding effort from falling to 36-5.

That's a beauty. There's turn and bounce. Straight away, it's made Colin de Grandhomme think he's got to do something, which in his case is to dance down the wicket.

  9. NZ 95-5published at 38.1 overs

    Gorgeous delivery from Leach.

Turn and bounce and it rips past the outside edge of De Grandhomme's nervy prod forward.

  10. NZ 95-5published at 38 overs

Broad sends down an inswinger and Watling judges the leave well enough, with the ball zipping over and wide of off stump.

Watling hit that one slightly on the up - it was a good shot and well-timed, but it's a very good length from Stuart Broad.

  12. Chance!published at 37.3 overs

A testing length from Broad draws Watling into the drive, but the England bowler can't quite dive far enough to snaffle what would have been a superb catch.

Instead, the Kiwi keeper gets four.

  13. NZ 91-5published at 37 overs

    Leach 6-2-9-0

More promising stuff from Leach, who is certainly adept at holding down an end at least. Another maiden for the Somerset spinner.

Any concerns about rain hitting us this afternoon - as I was told there could be - are long since gone. It's a beautiful sunny afternoon.

  15. NZ 91-5published at 36 overs

    De Grandhomme 39, Watling 23

More solid work from Broad, conceding just one off the over as De Grandhomme pulls to square leg.

Rather than having mid-off and extra cover back, Leach should bring mid-off up and tempt the batsman into hitting him over the top. That then brings the cover fielders, and slip, into play. But I like what Leach is doing - he's bowling very slightly full, but better full than short.

  17. NZ 90-5published at 35 overs

Oof! Leach rips it past De Grandhomme's outside edge and off Bairstow's pad, with Stokes making a fine diving save at slip.

The first ball to really grip and turn, good signs for the slow left-armer.

De Grandhomme taps to mid-off and takes a quick single. The stumps are thrown down but the all-rounder is safe, as the third umpire quickly confirms.

Ollie Slack: Important spell for England. Broad & Anderson took good wickets this morning in English-like conditions. Nothing new. Can they continue taking those wickets as the pitch becomes more suited to batting? Judging by their very recent history away from home, no.

  19. NZ 89-5published at 34 overs

    Trail by 218

De Grandhomme pushes through the covers for two before a single off the last.

  20. NZ 87-5published at 33.4 overs

Watling clips to mid-wicket for a quick single that brings up the fifty partnership between himself and De Grandhomme.

A vital recovery job from this pair - can they cash in on the older ball and carry on?
