Most of the excitement was packed into the first session of the final day in our opening round of County Championship matches.

Hampshire completed an ultimately comfortable win over Worcestershire, but in dramatic scenes at Old Trafford, Notts lost four wickets in scoring just 10 to beat Lancashire, who themselves slumped from their overnight 58-2 to 73 all out.

The loss of four complete days at Headingley for Yorkshire and Essex was a major talking point, while in Division Two, Gloucestershire saw off Kent at Canterbury and Warwickshire drew with Sussex.

Top individual performances on the day came from Notts pace bowler Harry Gurney, who took 6-25, and Sussex all-rounder David Wiese, scorer of the Championship's first century of the summer.

It's all over as the players shake hands on a draw. Sussex would've harbored faint hopes of a win after reducing Warwickshire to 55-3 in their second innings, but with 150 overs lost in the game due to bad weather a stalemate was always likely.

An entertaining game nonetheless, with David Wiese scoring an aggressive 106 off 105 balls, his highest score in Championship cricket for Sussex, while Warwickshire's Olly Stone registered a career-best in all first-class cricket with 8-80.

With his pace, he is definitely one to keep an eye on this summer.

Sussex keeper Ben Brown pauses to take his gloves off after the first delivery of David Wiese's 10th over. Possibly a bit of soreness, but he seems OK to carry on. The over passes without runs or further incident and Warwickshire remain 10 in front with seven wickets in hand.

Possibly with one eye on the over rate, Luke Wells comes into the attack with his occasional leg-spin. Dominic Sibley closes out the over with careful defence and is now 41 not out. Adam Hose has an unbeaten 14 and Warwickshire have a lead of 10.

Dominic Sibley tucks David Wiese away through mid-wicket for four and Warwickshire are into the black at Edgbaston. The former Surrey batsman now has 40 not out, with Adam Hose on eight - but is there enough time left in the game for him to reach a half-century?

Seven years ago, head coach Peter Moores guided Lancashire to the title.

These days, he's doing the same job for Notts and they set out their stall for the summer with victory over his former employers after an astonishing morning session on the final day when Harry Gurney (6-25) and Jake Ball (4-14) ran through Lancashire's batting line-up.

"Extraordinary is probably the right word for it. It was an outstanding hour of cricket by us," said Moores.

"We made the most of the conditions. Harry Gurney set the tone. He bowled brilliantly all game. He held length and moved the ball both ways.

"And Jake Ball did what Jake Ball can do. If he wanted to make a statement then he's done it with nine wickets in the game. He bowled aggressively, he bowled at the stumps and he got his lengths right."

Warwickshire 299 & 64-3 v Sussex 374

A slight pause in proceedings as Dominic Sibley is struck on the right elbow by a delivery from Ollie Robinson. He looks in some discomfort but manages to get off strike and move on to 31. Adam Hose sees out the over and Warwickshire are now 11 adrift.

As we mentioned earlier (see 4.04 entry), Glamorgan are one of six teams who will start their first Championship game of the season on Friday. Here are a few thoughts from skipper Michael Hogan.

Making good starts to games has been identified as a key to success this summer by Hampshire.

And according to skipper James Vince, it was that approach that stood them in good stead in their home victory over Worcestershire earlier today.

"The way we started the game set us up quite nicely which allowed us to get over par in the first innings.

"First innings runs is something we have talked about and we have to accept on a wicket like that 290 is a good score," said Vince, who was also pleased with the efforts of his pace attack.

"We know what to expect from Kyle (Abbott). He is as consistent you are going to get for a seamer. And, as the game went on Fidel (Edwards) hit the gloves a bit harder and found some nice rhythm."

From Phil Webb: "In all this, after 1 game we may have overlooked that Fidel Edwards has scored 4 more runs than the entire Yorklshire and Essex teams combined #bbccricket."

From Ralph Brooker: "Olly Stone looking a real handful early in the season. Pace. Aggression. Music of the chin! Does he swing it too? #bbccricket @WarwickshireCCC."

From Chris Ward: "Does anyone know why we don't have a full round of fixtures this week? Seems ridiculous that with an even number of teams in both divisions, there are teams not playing #countycricketlive #bbccricket."

The afternoon session saw Olly Stone take a career best 8-80 and David Wiese make his highest score for Sussex of 106, but the game looks set for a draw.

Both sides will take positives from the match and on this evidence both will expect to be challenging for promotion at the end of September

Is this Harry Gurney unsuccessfully attempting a 'dab' during Nottinghamshire's win over Lancashire earlier today? Perhaps not, but the left-arm seamer certainly had plenty to smile about after taking 6-25, giving him match figures of 8-47. He only managed 27 in total last season, so that's a great start - but needs to keep it up as Notts have Mark Footitt, no mean left-armer himself, waiting in the wings.

Despite a couple of nervous moments, Warwickshire have reached the tea interval trailing by 30. Barring a calamitous start to the final session, the draw is very much on the cards. Dominic Sibley will resume on 23, with Ian Bell unbeaten on 10.

Unlucky for David Wiese, bowling the 13th over of the innings and having an appeal for caught behind against Dominic Sibley turned down. The batsman gets through the over on 17 not out and Ian Bell is unbeaten on four. Warwickshire are 42 runs behind.
