There was no doubt about the star attraction yesterday at Edgbaston, as Olly Stone took a career-best six wickets in only his second Championship game for Warwickshire.

The 24-year-old spent much of last season still trying to put a knee injury suffered in his final game of the 2016 season for Northamptonshire behind him, but he looks like he's back to full fitness now.

"It's nice to be able to contribute," he told BBC Coventry & Warwickshire.

"To get six wickets on the first bowling session is always nice. A career best is always good and hopefully I can add to it tomorrow and make it even better."

We've heard what Essex have had to say about the abandonment at Headingley, but what about the hosts?

BBC Radio Leeds have spoken to Yorkshire groundsman Andy Fogarty, who described recent conditions as "the worst in 30 years I've known".

He said: "This weather seems to have started since January right until now.

"We're trying to prepare pitches, trying to prepare the outfield and you get one good day in between seven or eight days of rain, there's just nothing you can do.

"We rely a lot on the drainage but unfortunately when there's so much rain, the drainage can't cope. The water table's really high anyway so it's not draining away, it's not going away properly, it's not evaporating.

"We usually have some warmth at this time of year, we're not getting that, it's cold days, the temperatures are down, it's not drying weather."

  4. Wickets settle Mennie nervespublished at 10:41 British Summer Time 16 April 2018

    Lancashire 158 & 58-2 (24 overs) v Nottinghamshire 222 - match resumes 11:00

Australia pace bowler Joe Mennie got his Lancashire career off to a decent start, taking 3-46 against Nottinghamshire on the third day.

His side still trail by six runs with eight second-innings wickets in hand though, having lost Haseeb Hameed and Alex Davies - but a draw looks the most likely result despite a better forecast.

"You're always nervous in a new competition against teams you don't know as well. But I think I've settled in pretty well," Mennie said.

"They bowled well yesterday morning and getting those wickets late on the first day dragged us back in. But the rain has limited things for both teams."

  5. Weather outlookpublished at 10:37 British Summer Time 16 April 2018

So no play at Headingley, but BBC Weather presenter Carol Kirkwood is expecting a much brighter day in other parts of the country (see below), which is good news for fans interested in the four remaining games. For a more localised forecast, visit the BBC Weather page.

  6. Match abandoned at Headingleypublished at 10:33 British Summer Time 16 April 2018

Yorkshire v Essex - no play, 5 pts each

    HeadingleyImage source, Rex Features

No play was possible on the first three days at Headingley because of damp patches on the outfield, and after a 10:00 inspection, it's been decided there will be no action today either.

It's the first time since 1967 that every day of a Championship match has been lost at the ground.

There wasn't any actual rainfall over the first two days of the contest, though, leaving Essex assistant head coach Dimi Mascarenhas questioning Yorkshire's commitment to getting the game on.

"The players are champing at the bit to get out there," the former Hampshire all-rounder told BBC Essex.

"As you've seen, there's not many people out on that ground trying to make it playable. Nobody's really doing anything to move it along, they're just waiting."

  7. Good morningpublished at 10:28 British Summer Time 16 April 2018

So the first round of this summer's County Championship is almost at an end.

Middlesex earned themselves a day of extra practice by beating Northants on Sunday, and it looks like we'll soon have another result in Division Two with Gloucestershire needing just 47 more runs to beat Kent.

Elsewhere, Worcestershire will resume on 59-3, needing to score 324 to beat Hampshire, but the games at Old Trafford and Edgbaston are less advanced.

As for Yorkshire against champions Essex at Headingley - there's little to be said as we haven't seen a ball bowled in the match.

Welcome to our coverage of the final day's play.
