  1. Glorious shot by Westleypublished at 12:01 British Summer Time 20 April 2018

    Essex 27-1 (14 overs) v Lancashire

It has been an excellent opening spell by Graham Onions, but Tom Westley adds four runs to the Essex total with a magnificent on-drive just wide of the stumps. Onions has 1-9 from his seven overs so far. How many more will Liam Livingstone give the former Durham seamer?

  2. A return for Woodpublished at 12:00 British Summer Time 20 April 2018

    Surrey 33-2 v Hampshire

Chris Wood is into the attack alongside Brad Wheal at the Oval. The left-armer, who is into the side because Gareth Berg is awaiting the birth of a child, hasn't played a County Championship match since May 2016 due to injury.

He eases his way in, with a maiden outside Rory Burns' off-stump.

  3. Feast your eyes on thispublished at 11:56 British Summer Time 20 April 2018

    Somerset 26-2 v Worcestershire

    Wow. James Hildreth.

Somerset have been under the cosh this morning, but check out this whipped six from the veteran in Taunton. Tasty.

    Durham 27-3 v Kent

    Adam Whitty

Some of the Durham members, gently taking their seats at the Riverside ground, will have spat out their breakfast brew at the sight before them this morning.

Durham were 4-2, with Matt Henry bowling some sharp, straight deliveries early this morning.

    Matt Henry's mood right now

He nipped out South Afrian Aiden Markram lbw and then made a mess of Will Smith's off-stump to get Kent off to a marvelous start.

Gareth Harte has just been trapped lbw for 16 to leave Durham three-down and Kent with a bowling point.

  5. wicket

WICKET - Pujara (lbw b Fletcher) 2published at 11:50 British Summer Time 20 April 2018

    Yorkshire 36-2 (11.2 overs) v Nottinghamshire

India Test star Cheteshwar Pujara doesn't look happy with that decision as the umpire upholds Luke Fletcher's appeal. The ball was angled into his pads, beating his defensive stroke, but there appears to be a question about whether it would have cleared the stumps.

Adam Lyth picked up two boundaries in the previous over from Jake Ball, the first effortlessly driven through mid-off and the second a fortunate deflection down to third man off the face of the bat as he tried to lift it out of the way.

  6. Good contest in the sunshinepublished at 11:45 British Summer Time 20 April 2018

    Surrey 28-2 (9.1 overs) v Hampshire

It's been a good contest at the Oval so far.

Hampshire might have been worried after losing the toss under sunny skies the hosts would make hay. But Kyle Abbott and Fidel Edwards have tested Surrey's left-handed top four with decent lengths and some swing.

Batsmen of the class of Rory Burns and Dean Elgar are enduring so far.

  7. Bowling change for Lancashirepublished at 11:43 British Summer Time 20 April 2018

    Essex 13-1 (10.4 overs) v Lancashire

Some nice, tight, disciplined bowling here from Lancashire including that early wicket of Varun Chopra.

Australian Joe Mennie is on for a trundle in place of Tom Bailey and has an early leg before shout against Tom Westley.

Runs hard to come by at present.

  8. Division Two round-uppublished at 11:40 British Summer Time 20 April 2018

Matt Henry has enjoyed a perfect start for Kent at Durham. The New Zealand paceman taking two wickets to leave the hosts 17-2.

Northants have lost Ben Duckett and are 25-1 against Warwickshire.

Derbyshire are 31-1 in Derby against Middlesex with Luis Reece back in the pavilion.

Gloucestershire are 31-2 in Bristol, with openers Benny Howell and Chris Dent dismissed by Glamorgan's Lukas Carey.

More sedate at Grace Road, where visitors Sussex openers Luke Wells and Philip Salt are going steady on 17-0 against Michael Carberry's Leicestershire.

  10. wicket

    WICKET - Byrom (c Cox b Leach) 4published at 11:31 British Summer Time 20 April 2018

    Somerset 9-2 v Worcestershire

Another wicket for Worcestershire as the first half-hour tickets over. It's Joe Leach with it, having Eddie Byrom caught behind by Ben Cox.

James Hildreth joins Matthew Renshaw in the middle.

  11. wicket

WICKET - Borthwick (lbw b Edwards) 5published at 11:28 British Summer Time 20 April 2018

    Surrey 23-2 v Hampshire

Another Surrey left-hander falls lbw to Fidel Edwards. This time it's Scott Borthwick who departs after just seven balls.

Edwards had the benefit of a proper pre-season and it's already showing.

  12. wicket

    WICKET - Lees (c Taylor b Ball) 7published at 11:28 British Summer Time 20 April 2018

    Yorkshire 25-1 (6.3 overs) v Nottinghamshire

First wicket of the game falls at Headingley....

Adam Lyth and Alex Lees looked like they were making a strong start after being put in.

But, it's Lees who falls as Jake Ball finds his outside edge and Ross Taylor scoops up the catch in the slips.

Ball picking up from where he left off against Lancashire last week.

  13. Smith named national selectorpublished at 11:25 British Summer Time 20 April 2018

    Ed SmithImage source, Getty Images

News meanwhile from elsewhere in the cricket world and it's just been confirmed that former player and Test Match Special commentator Ed Smith is England's new national selector.

His appointment forms a "part of a new approach to scouting, assessing and selecting players" across all formats.

He will be helped by "discipline-specific scouts" and will work with head coach Trevor Bayliss.

Smith said:, external"Selection and talent ID have always fascinated me and I've explored extensively how they are evolving."

  14. wicket

    Essex 12-1 (5.3 overs) v Lancashire

    Onions appealImage source, Rex Features

    Wicket time at Chelmsford.

Varun Chopra survived an early shout for leg before from Graham Onions, but he's not so fortunate this time.

Trapped on the crease by one that nips back and Neil Bainton has little hesitation in raising his finger to that one.

  15. wicket

WICKET - Trescothick (lbw Magoffin) 1published at 11:19 British Summer Time 20 April 2018

    Somerset 1-1 v Worcestershire

A great start for newly-promoted Worcestershire! Marcus Trescothick is back in the hutch as new signing Steve Magoffin strikes in the fourth over of the morning.

Magoffin arrived from Sussex in the off-season and already looks a shrewd addition.

  16. Two wickets in quick succession at Chester-le-Streetpublished at 11:15 British Summer Time 20 April 2018

    Durham 8-2 (3.3 overs) v Kent

The old adage of "get one, get two" has worked out nicely for Kent against Durham so far this morning....

  17. wicket

WICKET - Stoneman (lbw b Edwards) 4published at 11:10 British Summer Time 20 April 2018

    Surrey 8-1 v Hampshire

Fidel Edwards draws the outside edge from England opener Mark Stoneman. Luckily for the Surrey man it flies past Sam Northeast at third slip for four.

But he's not so lucky two balls later as the West Indian swings one back into the pads. The finger goes up and Stoneman is walking back to the Oval pavilion.

  18. Champions up and running, but a couple of scarespublished at 11:10 British Summer Time 20 April 2018

    Essex 9-0 (2.1 overs) v Lancashire

Browne and ChopraImage source, Rex Features

Runs on the board for Essex at Chelmsford, but encouragement for Lancashire's bowlers early on.

Nick Browne rather fortuitously edges for four second ball through third slip off Tom Bailey to get off the mark.

Varun Chopra also survives a big lbw shout from Graham Onions before a nice back-foot drive through the covers off Bailey.

  19. No return for Stonepublished at 11:06 British Summer Time 20 April 2018

    Northants 4-1 v Warwickshire

    Clive Eakin
BBC Coventry & Warwickshire Sport at Wantage Road

The much anticipated return to his former county for Warwickshire bowler Olly Stone has ended before it's started. After taking a career best eight-wicket haul against Sussex, Stone has been ruled by a hamstring injury.

Warwickshire are hopeful that Stone won't be out of action for long, but he misses out on this one.

It's a gloriously sunny day at Wantage Road and we've had the novelty of a toss. Northants won it and bat first.

But, they've lost a wicket just seven balls into the day as Ben Duckett is caught without scoring in the gully by Will Rhodes off the bowling of Ryan Sidebottom.

  20. Durham put in by Kentpublished at 11:03 British Summer Time 20 April 2018

    Durham 1-0 v Kent

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Newcastle at Chester-le-Street

There wasn't much in the way of a surprise when Kent skipper Joe Denly asked Paul Collingwood to bat.

It's sunny here and a nice day but the wicket is very much the colour of dark straw and the ground staff have been battling the elements for weeks, although this week's sunshine provides a pleasant respite.

It means we have an early chance to see South African Aiden Markram in action as he makes his debut along with Natham Rimmington. Gareth Harte also makes his first class bow as well because Cameron Steel is ill.

Ivan Thomas comes in for the visitors.
