The fielders are all around the bat, thinking that Sodhi will pop a catch up to them. They've been trying this since he came in.

When you're bowling to tail-enders, the short ball needs to be a surprise.

Stuart Broad takes the first over after drinks.

After a few short ones he throws in a full one and Ish Sodhi flashes at it, edging over the slips and away for four.

A daft shot in the circumstances but he gets away with it.

How come Malan hasn't bowled a couple of overs of the 107 they've bowled?

Hello if you're just joining us...England need three wickets to win the second Test and level the series.

They have an hour to do it - although bad light might intervene.

Stuart Broad took two wickets with the first two balls of the day, before Jack Leach got his first Test wicket and James Anderson struck before lunch.

BJ Watling and Tom Latham dug in before falling to Mark Wood and Leach respectively.

Colin de Grandhomme then did the same until he pulled one to fine leg after tea. Ish Sodhi and Neil Wagner have been stoic in defence so far...

Well played Wagner. Wood is bowling as fast as he can, but Wagner is judging the pace and the bounce quite well, when there are three fielders within a couple of paces.

    14 overs left

There is no real variable bounce in this pitch and Wood can't get one to surprise Wagner, who calmly defends the rest of the over.

That means we're into the final hour and that's drinks.

Sodhi fends at a short one and gloves it...but the ball loops high and wide of the slip cordon and the Kiwi jogs through for the single.

It looks like England will sneak in that extra over before the final hour as Mark Wood readies himself.

Yeesh. After five sedate balls, Leach fizzes the last past Wagner's bat. No edge though and on we go.

That single may have worked in England's favour.

Jack Leach is called back into the attack and this time he'll have the left-handed Neil Wagner to bowl at.

Target: the footholes outside off stump.

Root is kneeling at silly mid-off - I've never seen that before.

Wagner defends two and then dabs it between the two men at silly point away for a single.

The Russian judge would give at least a 5.0 for that dive in the field.

Ooof. Sodhi gloves a short ball up in the air and just wide of the diving fielder at gully.

And this time Sodhi does take the run on offer.

They might be able to sneak an extra over in here, if they can bowl three more by five o'clock (06:00 BST). The last hour begins at five o'clock or when there are 15 overs left, whichever is the later.

The sun is still shining in Christchurch.

Mark Wood has changed ends and is back on. He's got Ish Sodhi to bowl at this time.

It's not a case of getting through all the overs for England, it's a case of bowling a decent ball. If you wanted a rogue element, I think it's worth Malan for an over or two as we've seen finger spin but not leg-spin.

Root gets one to kick up out of the footholes but it's too wide and Wagner leaves well alone.

Root forces him to play the last two but Wagner defends well.

New Zealand are thoroughly content not to score another run today.

We were off earlier than this yesterday. The weather today's been about as good as England could have hoped for.

It's tight and getting exciting. New Zealand have lasted longer than some people might have expected, and the pitch has no demons in it.
