PARTNERSHIP FOR SOMERSETpublished at 11:55 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Somerset 55-0 (13 overs) v Lancashire

Matt Renshaw posts a half-century stand with Marcus Trescothick by taking a single off fellow Australian Joe Mennie and adds a boundary off Jimmy Anderson in the next over - the ninth of the morning for Somerset.

Renshaw, who has made a big impression since joining the visitors, moves on to 17, with Trescothick 35 not out at the other end.

    Yorkshire 22-5 (8 overs) v Essex

When Gary Ballance won the toss and chose to bat first at Chelmsford, he may have been anticipating a quiet morning with his feet up, watching his top-order batsmen pile up the runs.

Instead, he is at the crease with a full-blown crisis on his hands after England's Jonny Bairstow becomes the fourth victim of the morning for Sam Cook. With wicketkeeper James Foster standing up to the stumps, Bairstow pushes forward defensively but chooses the wrong line and the ball hits off stump.

Cook now has 4-8 from four overs - amazing stuff from the 20-year-old local boy.

  3. Division Two round-uppublished at 11:41 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

Ollie Robinson has made a double breakthrough for Sussex at Hove, sending back Middlesex openers Nick Gubbins and Sam Robson for eight and 10 respectively - the latter Robinson's 100th wicket in first-class cricket. Stevie Eskinazi and Dawid Malan are trying to repair the damage with the score 27-2.

Glamorgan have made a steady start against Kent at Sophia Gardens, reaching 21-0 in the 11th over, and it's a similar situation at the Riverside where Leicestershire are 20-0 in the 10th against Durham.

Warwickshire are going along nicely on day two of their game against Derbyshire, with Will Rhodes and nightwatchman Chris Wright having so far put on 64. The Bears are 82-1, replaying to Derbyshire's 318 all out.

  4. wicket

Nash and Libby fall at Trent Bridgepublished at 11:35 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Nottinghamshire 27-3 (6.5 overs) v Hampshire

Wickets are falling in Nottinghamshire too with the hosts now three down, having won the toss this morning and opted to bat.

Chris Nash was brilliantly caught at fourth slip off the first of Fidel Edwards' fourth over before Jake Libby was trapped lbw for a 19-ball duck by the West Indian.

  5. wicket

WICKET Pujara (lbw Porter) 9published at 11:32 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Yorkshire 11-4 (4.3 overs) v Essex

It's a procession at Chelmsford as prolific wicket-taker Jamie Porter claims his first victim. Cheteshwar Pujara shapes to play to leg, the ball holds its own, and that's pretty much a formality for the umpire. We've only had 30 minutes play and Jonny Bairstow is at the crease at number six.

In case you missed it earlier on, England skipper Joe Root went for a first-ball duck. You can work out what he thought about that by looking at the photo below.

  6. Bailey takes early batteringpublished at 11:31 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Somerset 39-0 (8 overs) v Lancashire

Pace bowler Tom Bailey took 16 wickets for Lancashire in their first three matches, but he's been finding it tough at Old Trafford and has been taken off after three overs with the new ball cost him 29 runs.

Marcus Trescothick has raced to 31 not out with the help of six fours and the visitors have brought on Australian Joe Mennie to try and a) take a wicket or b) stem the flow of fours.

Jimmy Anderson is going about business as usual at the other end - his opening four overs have yielded just seven runs.

  7. Slow start at the Ovalpublished at 11:30 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Surrey 9-0 (7 overs) v Worcestershire

Mark Stoneman and Rory Burns have made a very slow but steady start at the Oval this morning, having opted to bat after winning the toss.

Having failed to make a substantial score in his opening two County Championship matches, England opener Stoneman will undoubtedly be looking to mark his mark ahead of a busy summer.

  8. Sun arrives at the Riversidepublished at 11:27 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Leicestershire 14-0 (6.4 overs) v Durham

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Newcastle

Now then. How many of you expected to hear about a coin toss in Chester-le-Street in early May? I have to say we were mildly surprised.

But as a result Paul Collingwood got his wish to bowl and Michael Carberry his desire to bat.

It's a sunny day and it feels like the cricket season is really here after a stuttering start for Durham and the loss of their entire game at rainy Northants last time out.

The groundstaff have only had one day to prepare the pitch because of second team and academy matches, but it has been a dry few days in the North East and it looks a decent wicket.

  10. wicket

WICKET Root (c Cook b Cook) 0published at 11:16 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Yorkshire 9-3 (3.2 overs) v Essex

Would you Adam and Eve it - a golden quacker for England's captain at Chelmsford.

Three wickets already for Sam Cook who has Adam Lyth caught behind for a duck and then tempts Root into edging an attempted drive to first slip, where his predecessor as England skipper Alastair Cook takes the catch.

Gary Ballance survives the hat-trick ball, but wow, what a start to the game. Seriously, wow!

  11. wicket

WICKET Mullaney (c Wheal b Abbott) 11published at 11:14 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Nottinghamshire 11-1 (3.2 overs) v Hampshire

South African pace bowler Kyle Abbott has started the season well for Hampshire and there's another wicket to add to his collection as Nottinghamshire's skipper departs early. Steven Mullaney attempts a short-arm pull as Abbott digs one in but only succeeds in picking out the square leg fielder. Not a great shot that one.

  12. Positive start by Trescothickpublished at 11:12 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Somerset 17-0 (3 overs) v Lancashire

Could Somerset win their first three games of the season? Marcus Trescothick has them up and running at Taunton with three boundaries in Tom Bailey's opening over. Jimmy Anderson has the new ball at the other end and his first two include a maiden and cost only five runs.

WICKET Brook (c Harmer b Cook) 0published at 11:06 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Yorkshire 0-1 v Essex (1.3 overs)

Cook strikes for Essex - no, it's not Alastair Cook, it's seam bowling namesake Sam, who accounts for Harry Brook with his third ball of the match in a nice bit of rhyming action. Simon Harmer takes a low catch at second slip. Definitely not the start Yorkshire wanted after choosing to bat first.

  14. Kent bowlers - start your engines!published at 11:03 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

Glamorgan v Kent - Kent bowling first

    Adam Whitty
    BBC Radio Kent

Grey skies loom over the newly named Sophia Gardens this morning, although I am reliably informed that we should have a full day's play, and that a slight chill in the breeze is as bad as we are going to get all bank holiday weekend.

    Sophia Gardens
    Image caption,

A grey, slightly chilly, but dry day awaits in the Welsh capital

Kent's bowling attack will be led by Matt Henry (who took 12-73) in a nine-wicket win against Durham, and with help from Harry Podmore and Darren Stevens, this is a formidable bowling attack.

Joe Denly's side haven't been involved in an innings in which more than 170 has been scored in the County Championship so far, but after a solid, if interrupted, performance against Pakistan, hopes may be high of back to back four-day victories.

  15. Play under waypublished at 11:01 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

So no hold-ups anywhere. Excellent news.

Despite the calls from some for Joe Root to bat at three for England, he is resolute in his preference for number four and that is where, according to the team list, he will be batting for Yorkshire against Essex at Chelmsford.

Meanwhile, Jimmy Anderson will be opening the bowling for Lancashire at Taunton, where the other big news is that out of form opener Haseeb Hameed has been left out by the visitors.

    Let's rock n roll, chaps.....

  16. Riverside rivals look to break duckpublished at 10:59 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

Durham v Leicestershire - play starts 11:00 BST

Neither Durham nor Leicestershire have won a game yet in Division Two - though the north-east county didn't have a chance to do so last when their entire game at Northampton was washed out.

Will either of them 'break their duck' this week? Here's BBC Radio Newcastle's Martin Emmerson with a video preview of the game at Chester-le-Street.

    Derbyshire 318 v Warwickshire 31-2 - play resumes 11:00 BST

Derbyshire batsman Wayne Madsen reflects on day one of Warwickshire v Derbyshire

We've already had a day's play in the Division Two game between Warwickshire and Derbyshire at Edgbaston - and it was a good one for batsman Wayne Madsen.

He hit 15 fours in a superb innings of 144 before he and last man Mark Footitt fell to successive balls from Henry Brookes, who will be on a hat-trick at the start of their second innings.

“To put the team in this sort of position and to play an important innings like that, is extremely satisfying," Madsen told BBC Radio Derby.

"It spun considerably for day one, the wicket’s a little bit stoppy at times, but there’s something in it for everyone in terms of the bowling. Getting over 300 was crucial."

  18. Anderson 'brings class' for Lancashirepublished at 10:54 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

Lancashire v Somerset - play starts 11:00 BST

Last week, there were reports that England pace bowler Jimmy Anderson might not be able to make his seasonal bow for Lancashire today after having injections in his shoulder and ankle.

It looks like those doubts were unfounded as Anderson will be in action against Somerset at Old Trafford and as you can see from the video below - posted on his Instagram page earlier this week - he's just as accurate as ever.

It may only be for a couple of games, but head coach Glenn Chapple is delighted to have him back for the Red Rose, who lost two of their opening three fixtures.

“We all know that Jimmy is going to fight for Lancashire and bring some class to the team as well," Chapple told the club website., external "Two games from Jimmy means a lot, and I can’t remember a season where he hasn’t had a major influence on us winning a game - if not, more than that. I'm sure he'll be up for doing that again."

  20. What happened last week?published at 10:49 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Division One tableImage source, .

The weather again had a major part to play in the third round of County Championship matches.

Not a single over was bowled between Northamptonshire and Durham, only one and a bit innings were possible for Middlesex and Glamorgan, while at the Ageas Bowl, several Essex players took to wearing hats to try and stave off the cold.

In Division One, though, Notts and Somerset completed convincing victories over Worcestershire and Yorkshire and they are setting the pace at the top of the Division One table.

There were no winners or losers in Division Two, with all three games which saw play ending in draws, thus enabling Warwickshire, who had the week off, to retain pole position (see below) - albeit by a single point from Derbyshire.
