    Eton mess.

Closest comparison is turkey at Christmas... you get all excited about how great it's going to be, tuck in and realise it's average at best and you can't remember why you were excited in the first place. (Ps. Always have goose for Christmas!)

    Broad 4-2-8-1

Ooft. Another appeal from Stuart Broad as he clonks his way into Azhar Ali's pads. That's hit the back leg, though, and I suspect he's got some bat on it, too.

Broad's appealing for everything at the minute, including one that pitches about a mile outside off stump. Jonny Bairstow mimes that for him, before Broad straightens his line up.

    Calz McGlynn: Melted ice cream.

Chris, London: A soufflé. Looks great initially and then collapses as soon as it comes under any pressure at all.

Tim, Southend: It's surely quite a simple comparison....Tripe, totally tripe!

Haris Sohail tries to block his way out of a James Anderson over, but Anderson slips one past the inside edge of the bat, just to keep him wary.

    Are we going upstairs again...?

James Anderson cracks Azhar Ali on the pad and pleads with the umpire. Joe Root jogs over, but Jonny Bairstow and Anderson have already decided not to have a look at it. It's jagged back a bit too much, and it's missing the stumps.

    Broad 3-1-8-1

I will never mock Stuart Broad's reviewing ability again. Well. Not for a while, at least.

He greets new man Haris Sohail to the crease with an absolute beauty, just nipping past the bat as he tentatively pushes forward. Ooh, that'll be four, though, courtesy of a sumptuous clip off the pads.

From here it looked out, it looked so straight. Broad and Anderson can bowl and Pakistan will have to bat really well to get a lead.

Imam lbw Broad 4 (Pak 12-1)

    Gone!

That was very similar to the Ben Stokes dismissal in that, er, it didn't look out. It's pitched in line, though, the ball scuttling past Imam-ul-Haq's attempted shovel off his pads, and whacked him in front of the middle stump.

Stuart Broad loves this. He thinks he's got Imam-ul-Haq lbw. Joe Root reviews it...

Oh! A superb effort from Jonny Bairstow, going flying to his left, one hand outstretched, as he chases after what he thinks is a nick from Azhar Ali.

It's thigh pad, though - Stuart Broad shouts that through to him always straight away - and the Pakistan duo jog a bye.

England might have to be patient for the first 10-15 overs and wait for the lacquer to come off. That's when it started to do a bit for Pakistan.

    Imam 4, Azhar 6

This is really good from James Anderson, finding that awkward length and forcing the batsmen to play.

Azhar Ali works a single safely away from his stumps, before Imam-ul-Haq sees out the rest of the over.

That's better from Stuart Broad, bending his back and sending the ball right into Imam-ul-Haq's midriff.

And a ball later, Imam gets himself off the mark with a thick outside edge that rolls down to the boundary. That'll make that bruise feel better.

I should point out there are actually 26 overs left. My apologies. I am bad at maths.

Azhar Ali gets cut in half by a James Anderson inswinger, before he gets himself and Pakistan off the mark with a delightful push down the ground for four. There's then a huge yell against Imam-ul-Haq has he chases after a leg side delivery. Another cracking take from Jonny Bairstow, but it's missed the bat.

What I saw from Stuart Broad in New Zealand was a completely different Stuart Broad to the one we saw in Australia. He’s got his wrist behind the ball and he’s worked hard on his technique.

I think we’re going to see real quality from Broad over the next few years. Broad, Anderson, Stokes and Wood looks a very prominent attack for me in these conditions.

  19. Pak 0-0published at 2 overs

Blimey. Imam-ul-Haq has a big swing and a miss at his first delivery from Stuart Broad.

Broad, maybe encouraged by that, drags his length back a bit and Imam lets the ball go safely through to Jonny Bairstow. In fact, Bairstow takes a superb, one-handed grab as Broad sends the final ball of the over down the leg side.
