Once again a good area outside of off stump and full. Pakistan have caught well, which sometimes hasn't been a strength of theirs. He might have got carried away after that superb shot just before.

    Ah.

A similar story. Dom Bess goes for a drive and, maybe a tad wrongfooted by a bit of extra pace, gets a thick edge that flies towards Asad Shafiq at second slip.

    This isn't great, I'm afraid.

Dom is going to have to do his Bess to get England out of a pickle here.

    Four!

Nice timing from Dom Bess, who gets his front foot forward and sends Mohammad Abbas racing down to the boundary with just a flick of the wrist. Lovely work. It draws an appreciative sigh from the crowd for the first time in a while...

If you're just checking in before your work day ends, then I bring you bad news.

    Post-tea, Ben Stokes has fallen...

And he was followed three deliveries later by Jos Buttler...

Mark Wood leans back and cracks a drive away off Hasan Ali, but it'll only bring him a single.

There's a round of applause a few balls later as Dom Bess gets his first runs in Test cricket with a drive through the covers.

A couple of quick wickets have put England right on the back foot. We were all thinking about an hour or two of Stokes and Buttler.

Dom Bess looks in good order, as he shuffles into defence and meets everything Mohammad Abbas sends his way with a straight bat.

New summer, same old England. Of the seven wickets, I make that four loose drives and two indeterminate pokes.

    Hasan 14-2-45-3

Mark Wood - who made 52 in his last Test outing for England - is the new man in.

Just the small matter of a fired up Hasan Ali for him to deal with... and a thwack from the pads goes racing away for four byes.

It wasn't a good shot - the foot was nowhere near the pitch of the ball. That would have been four in the IPL.

Asad Shafiq almost got knocked off his feet as he leaned back to take that catch. Superb reactions.

England's tail does feel a tad too lengthy right now...

    Gone! What a catch!

That is a cracking snaffle at second slip by Asad Shafiq, and Jos Buttler is on his way. He went after Hasan Ali with hard hands, the ball speared just a touch wider, and it flew off the outside edge. Shafiq gets his hands up high and, somehow, clings on.

    Going well, this...

He's getting a rousing hand. What a moment - to play your first match at Lord's and you're making your Test debut.

Here's Dom Bess, on his England debut.

He plonks Mohamamd Abbas' first ball out towards the covers, and that's a wicket-maiden for the Pakistan pacer.

Well, well. Very, very hairline whether it pitched outside leg stump. It's about as marginal as you can get. That is millimetres.

  19. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 53.5 overs

Stokes lbw Abbas 38 (Eng 168-6)

That has pitched in line on the finest of margins - and it's out!

Everyone looks a bit surprised. Not least Ben Stokes, who has a little kick at the air as he walks off. He pushed forward at Mohammad Abbas and missed. Into the knee roll went the ball, Stokes smack in front of middle stump, but my word, that just didn't look out at first glance...
