  1. What's changed?published at 10:43 British Summer Time 24 May 2018

    A few things, actually.

As well as the return of Jos Buttler and a debut for Dom Bess, England's batting order has had a reshuffle.

Joe Root is going back to three - he averages 43.96 there from 31 innings - and Dawid Malan moves up to four.

Wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow slots in at number five, which leaves all-rounder Ben Stokes to come in at six and Buttler at seven.

Mark Wood keeps his place over Chris Woakes - it was Wood that featured in the second Test against New Zealand back in March.

The first day of the first Test of the summer (especially when it's at Lord's) is a bit like the first day back at school, or a family reunion. Gate staff greet faces they haven't seen since last summer, spectators return to find their favourite spot just as they left it, media and past players greet old friends.

Familiar and new at the same time. A bit like Lord's itself.

It did spin here last year, why not get out there and get at them?

  5. 'Amir will be key'published at 10:37 British Summer Time 24 May 2018

Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed: "We wanted to bowl first - with the overhead conditions. Mohammad Amir will be a key bowler and hopefully he will perform for us.

"It's a very inexperienced team and it's a very young team. We are ready."

Liam H: Everyone's buzzing for the return of the English cricket summer, that is until we lose the toss, get put in and are 10-2 by 11:15.

    Well, you were half-right, Liam...

    England v Pakistan (11:00 BST)

England skipper Joe Root: "It probably looks on the surface like bowling conditions but it's very dry underneath, and it looks like it's already starting to crack and it may play into our favour. We've had three great preparation days and it's about putting it into practice."

On picking Mark Wood ahead of Chris Woakes: "He offers something slightly different and he can exploit the conditions later on hopefully."

Sarfraz calls heads - but it's tails!

Joe Root has won the toss, and England are gonna have a bat first. Dom Bess and Jos Buttler are both playing, and it's Mark Wood who nabs that final bowling slot.

I'd bat first. It does look a bit dry underneath, possibly the first hour will be tricky but try and get through that and get a decent total on the board and let it bake over the weekend. There are cracks out there already.

Dom - or Dominic, which he says his mum would prefer, external he's referred to as - has made 16 first-class appearances.

He made his debut as an 18-year-old for Somerset in a tour match against Pakistan and, although he finished with figures of 0-128, he had a post-match chat with Younus Khan about cricket.

He then went on to take five-fors in his first two County Championship matches, including 6-28 against Warwickshire, and on his debut for England Lions.

In fact, he has seven five-wicket hauls in 16 first-class matches and he's a developing batsman too boot - he scored a century for MCC against champions Essex in March.

Right, hello! It's almost time for the first Test of the summer - time to put aside what was a fairly awful winter, and start afresh.

Weather wise, it's a bit grey and a bit mizzly. That's not stopped Vic Marks presenting Somerset off-spinner Dom Bess with his Test cap this morning.

One minute you're in Ikea, having a barney over a sofa - the next, you're making your Test debut at Lord's.

It's not been a bad week for Dom Bess. He's still missing a sofa, mind...
