  1. Eng 160-5published at 49 overs

    Stokes 33, Buttler 11

It's not the Buttler-scoop yet, a conventional sweep to start with to Shadab for two, but the first boundary soon arrives, a flick of the wrists between mid-on and mid-wicket, swiftly followed by another - a drive through the covers. Four fours and a six conceded by the spinner in his five overs.

  2. Eng 150-5published at 48 overs

Just as with Stokes, he gets off the mark with rather tentative inside edge for a single.

Now then Jos. You're back in the Test side for the first time since December 2016. A specialist batsman with a brief to attack. He's in with Stokes. What is going to transpire? Let's find out.

I think Alastair should be forward to that. He's played nicely, a lot better, but it's a good ball. This pitch is not bouncy. You get balls in that in-between length and you need to get forward.

    Cook b Amir 70 (Eng 149-5)

Cook has just played an imperious back foot drive to the boundary but Amir takes a deserved wicket with one that clips the top of off-stump.

I would take that home and use it as a dishcloth. Just don't wear it tomorrow.

  9. 6 runs

    Eng 145-4published at 47 overs

    Cook 6, Stokes 33

The first maximum of the match as Stokes smears Shadab several rows back over mid-wicket, leaving the teenage spinner with 0-22 from his first four overs.

I think England will win - they will have enough big-time players over four innings.

But we're not a great side. We tend to win at home because our bowlers are good, but our batting is wobbly.

  11. Eng 139-4published at 46 overs

    Cook 66, Stokes 27

Amir back in the attack, hair neatly cropped and bearing little resemblance to the floppy, Hugh Grant look of 2010. His face is smeared in sun cream in the afternoon sun and Stokes uses every inch of his new bat to club three more valuable runs as the partnership extends to 39.

With the field they've got set, they're just asking Shadab Khan to hold an end up. I'd be tempted to put a short leg in to Ben Stokes.

  13. Eng 136-4published at 45 overs

    Shadab 0-16 from 3

Shadab again from the Pavilion End, beard neatly shaped a la George Michael in the Faith video. Stokes gets a thick edge safely wide of slip for four and Cook strikes a far more authoritative boundary with a sweetly-struck cover drive, his 13th four.

  14. 'Real challenge to make structure fair'published at 15:09 British Summer Time 24 May 2018

BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

Leicestershire chief executive Wasim Khan is the chair of the group looking at how domestic cricket will work when the new 100-ball competition arrives in 2020.

He told Test Match Special: "This is about working out what's right for cricket. Cricket has, for the past few years, been played in blocks. You've got concentrated time for each format. It's going to be a real challenge to understand how we structure that to make it as fair as possible for all the formats."

  15. Eng 126-4published at 44 overs

    Cook 61, Stokes 19

A full ball from Hasan rattles into the pads of Stokes and there is a loud appeal, but no review. The replay shows umpire's call. Both teams still have their two referrals intact. Stokes compounds the frustration for the tourists by playing the same shot across the line, but this time makes good contact and claims his fourth four.

    Shadab 0-6 from 2

The teenage leg-spinner Shadab returns for his second over. The reaction time against him is only 0.806 seconds, according to the new TV gadget, which would beat many of us for pace.

  18. ouch!

    Eng 120-4published at 42 overs

    Cook 60, Stokes 14

Hasan wrings his hand after it is struck by a Stokes straight drive, two balls after he is thumped for four. It looked suspiciously like a smirk from the England batsman, surely not? Hasan examines the affected area, which is already heavily taped, but is fit to continue and sends one down nudging 87mph, which Stokes calmly leaves alone.

  20. Eng 116-4published at 41 overs

    Cook 60, Stokes 10

Faheem again, full of menacing intent, with a reddish tinge to his jet black hair in the afternoon sun. Those clouds behind the Media Centre look menacing as well, but no stoppage yet. A delightful drive from Cook brings the former skipper his 12th boundary of the innings.
