Ben Stokes' fielding has gone up a level. He was the best fielder of any team at the whole IPL. The catches, the stops, the dives - it was full-hearted times ten.

  2. Eng 110-4published at 40 overs

    Cook 56, Stokes 9

The slightly-built Hasan continues from the Nursery End. He has an exuberant celebration, more Samurai than Flossy, which means we have to watch THAT shot by Joe again. No chance to display it in this one though as Stokes collects a second boundary, just a defensive push racing across the emerald turf to the long-off fence.

It's deja vu for for England. It doesn't matter what conditions have been in the last couple of years, they have generally been 100-4 - whether Joe Root is at three or four, whether Bairstow is four, fix or six. It's like the brains have been trained.

You can't say any of the four dismissals could have been stopped - there hasn't been a 'jaffa'. You've got to try and make it as difficult as possible for the opposition.

I've got tickets for the fifth day Fred, but my friend has rather inconveniently forgotten whether it is for this Test or the one against India in August. Faheem completes his eighth over and it's a maiden. Warming up at Lord's now and the tourists are dispensing with the sleeveless sweaters. The players will have a drink and it will be a cold one rather than a tea as it might have been first thing this morning.

Nothing wrong with batting first. Lord’s wickets have really spun in the last few years. Don't want to be batting on the fifth day.

    Cook 56, Stokes 5

Not out of the middle of the bat but there is enough power in the Stokes cover drive to Hasan and enough wood in his new blade to bring the left-hander his first boundary. Watery sunshine across the as-ever perfectly manicured Lord's striped outfield.

One chap in front of me gave a comedy boo as Ben Stokes walked out. This, remember, is Stokes' first innings in England since the Bristol incident last September.

  8. Eng 101-4published at 37 overs

    Cook 56, Stokes 1

That brings Ben Stokes to the crease and he gets a warm reception from the crowd. Two left handers out there for England now and Stokes gets off the mark in slightly unconvincing fashion with an inside edge for a single. The returning Jos Buttler in next, so how will the big hitters fare?

The perfect length, asking Bairstow to drive. He was looking for that inswinger and he missed the line. it didn't swing or seam or anything.

A massive wicket. That will really bring the energy back into the Pakistan camp.

Faheem back in the attack and he strikes with his first delivery, beating Bairstow and rattling the off stump.

The bustling Hasan Ali, who took 2-18 from seven overs in the morning session, returns from the Nursery End and Cook clips him off his pads for his 11th boundary.

    Abbas 1-18 from 11

The champagne corks on the outfield along with the egg and bacon MCC blazer are part of my Lord's bingo of thing to spot. Bairstow skews a low drive off a thick edge wide of gully which is gathered by Imam-ul-Haq, a bespectacled nephew of Inzamam and rather more sprightly. It signals a much-needed fifty partnership.

Earlier on, it was spotted that the champagne bar was card only. At that time, the presumption was that was because of the expensive booze.

However, pretty much every bar, concession and cafe at HQ is displaying card only signs.

    Has Lord's gone cash-free?

The England batsmen have slightly less time - 0.513 seconds - against Amir, who is bowling around 86mph. Sun out again, maybe that unflattering windcheater can be dispensed with in the crowd.

Dave‏: I missed the morning session and have just noticed that England are batting. Had assumed they must have lost the toss but apparently not. Why didn't England have a bowl under the clouds first?

Our television broadcasters have a new toy for the new season and it gives the reaction time the batsman has. This shows Jonny had 0.530 seconds to decide what to do to Abbas, who completes his 10th over and he has the parsimonious figures of 1-16.
