  • First Test of two-match series

  1. Pak 61-1published at 27 overs

    Sohail 26, Azhar 24

Shot! That'll be the first boundary of the day.

Onto the hip goes James Anderson, and Haris Sohail waits and turns his wrists to push the ball through mid-wicket and away for four. Anderson grumbles, straightens up his line, and Sohail stays circumspect.

Jonathan Raymond: After yet another awful batting display yesterday why is no one questioning Mark Ramprakash's role as batting coach?

  3. ouch!

    Pak 57-1published at 26 overs

    Trail by 127 runs

Jonny Bairstow takes a nasty whack on the thumb as he holds on to a swinging Stuart Broad delivery. Ouch. No fun being a keeper.

Azhar Ali whips his bat to work a couple through cover, before Broad sends down a final couple of deliveries that the batsman leaves well alone.

Pakistan look a good pack unit. They were good and solid with the bowling, they caught well and with the batting they looked to leave, no airy fairy shots. The looked well-marshalled and well coached.

  5. Pak 55-1published at 25 overs

James Anderson sends down six very nice, maybe slightly too short deliveries, and Haris Sohail leaves every one well alone.

Sohail, as an aside, made his debut against Sri Lanka last year. Prior to this match, he's scored 214 runs at an average of 35.66.

James Anderson, sans the acid white-blonde hair, is going to share bowling duties with Stuart Broad this morning.

  8. Pak 55-1published at 24 overs

    Azhar 22, Sohail 22

A fuller length from Stuart Broad almost straight away - and Haris Sohail responds with an airy drive that just about misses the ball.

Sohail gets the first runs off the day via the outside edge of the bat, before Azhar Ali picks up a couple with a well-timed jab of the bat.

Will Stoneman stay in the team?

I'd play him for the next Test for certain. He's got to find a way. The new ball is not easy and he hasn't scored a Test hundred, so he knows there is scrutiny and they are all talking about him.

But he's got to back himself and say he has earned the right to play for England and forget about the low scores. I expect him to play at Headingley. I know he's a good player - he's got to show everyone he's a Test-class player.

  10. Pak 50-1published at 23.1 overs

Haris Sohail hoicks his arms above his head, and lets the ball go safely through to Jonny Bairstow.

    We're under way!

  12. 'This is a ground for the old school'published at 10:58 British Summer Time 25 May 2018

    Michael Vaughan
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

These are conditions that you have to use all the basics you were taught growing up: pitch it on off stump as many balls as you can and as a batsman you look for the ball that's full under your nose to drive.

This is a ground for the old school; you have to be prepared for the attritional. If you go searching you will deliver some nice boundary balls for the batsmen and if you're batting, jut try and grind them down.

  14. 'England bowlers need to learn from Pakistan'published at 10:54 British Summer Time 25 May 2018

    Waqar Younis
    Former Pakistan pace bowler

It was a wonderful day for Pakistan - but it's only the first day, remember that. They bowled extremely well. They bowled the right length; the England bowlers were too short and wide - they need to learn from the Pakistan bowlers.

If Pakistan don't lose early wickets, they'll be happy.

  15. 'Hopefully we can turn it into 80-5'published at 10:54 British Summer Time 25 May 2018

More from England all-rounder Ben Stokes: "We had a really good three days preparation trying to get used to the swinging ball so it's about adapting to the format you're playing. I try to be an aggressive player and try to put the pressure back on the bowlers but they didn't give us too much.

"I didn't think we were that bad - Pakistan had the better day; they played really nicely. We need to challenge their defence a bit more. It's overcast and hopefully we can get back into the match and turn it into 80-5."

Just under 10 minutes to go until the start of play - it's pretty murky at Lord's, and Pakistan's top order isn't the most stable.

They were 14-3 against Ireland, with Tim Murtagh and Boyd Rankin doing the damage first up. Something for James Anderson and Stuart Broad to remember...

  17. 'Hit the top of off stump'published at 10:50 British Summer Time 25 May 2018

    Michael Vaughan
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

My advice to the England bowlers: aim to hit the top of off stump as often as you can. If you do that, you'd think that you can create opportunities in these conditions.

  19. 'Wicket might deteriorate over time'published at 10:47 British Summer Time 25 May 2018

BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

England's Ben Stokes, speaking to Test Match Special: "It was Pakistan's day yesterday. We didn't get the amount of runs we wanted. It's about coming out here and really trying to restrict their lead. Hopefully we can bowl them out for under the score we got."

On the decision to bat first: "It was a tough decision. The wicket was quite dry. I thought yesterday that it was quite a similar pitch to the one we played on against South Africa here at Lord's. I think it might deteriorate as time goes on."

  20. 'It was an awful start'published at 10:45 British Summer Time 25 May 2018

    Jonathan Agnew
BBC cricket correspondent on Test Match Special

It was not just the perilous nature of the score, but the manner of dismissals that was again so disappointing.

Too many batsmen contributed to their own downfalls.

After all the talk of moving on from a difficult winter, of a different era and the excitement of a new batting order, it was an awful start to the summer.

England want to be positive and, in some ways, I understand that approach.

But, on the other hand, the idea of a 'brand' of Test cricket makes me laugh because that is not how you play the game.
