The problem for England in this situation is that, yes, they will beat the bat, but the Pakistan players will play more strokes and score. Tailenders tend to hit the ball in strange areas.

Shot! That's a fine boundary from Faheem Ashraf, angling his bat as he plonks himself on the front foot and sends James Anderson's third delivery off through the covers.

Joe Root's seen enough - James Anderson is on for his first blast with the new ball.

In case you missed it, this is the moment Babar Azam had to retire hurt on 68 after taking a nasty blow from a Ben Stokes delivery.

  4. Pak 268-5published at 88 overs

Four byes to the total, as Stuart Broad spears a delivery down leg side, via Shadab Khan's thigh pad.

Broad looks thoroughly disgruntled and responds with another delivery that just takes off after it pitches and nips past Shadab's bat.

  5. Pak 264-5published at 87 over

    Faheem 13, Shadab 15

    Same delivery, same result.

Faheem Ashraf opens up the face of the bat and once again, the ball goes racing through Jos Buttler and down to the third man boundary. Dom Bess ends the over with a fine diving stop but Stokes and Broad miss the return throw, and Pakistan scamper an extra run.

He's a dangerous player, Faheem, he's a very nice timer of a cricket ball.

And, naturally, Faheem Ashraf tickles the first delivery of the next over for four, inches past a diving Jos Buttler at gully.

A shake of the head from Ben Stokes.

I don't think that had a lot going for it. I think it was going over leg stump and he has hit it!

    Pak 254-5

The third umpire reckons there's an edge on that, and so he reverses his decision.

Shadab Khan, on 15, survives. There was a spike on the technology just as the ball went past the bat. Ball tracking shows that it would have been umpire's call on the lbw shout.

    On we go!

    Hello, has he hit it?

That's an early review so he doesn't think something is quite right. Think it's a little bit high.

Stuart Broad's got Shadab Khan lbw!

Or has he? Shadab reviews it straight away. It may be a tad high...

Aidan Watson: Great, England have got to the new ball with only a little lead. Anderson can bowl them out with the new ball. What do you mean he isn't bowling?

Three for Faheem Ashraf from his first delivery, as a sliding stop on the boundary stops his little flick from reaching the ropes.

Ben Stokes, chuntering to himself, comes storming in and Faheem clips away a single.

It skidded down the hill, you kind of lose it, take your eye off the ball and you're waiting for the thud. It hit him on the tender bit, I hope he's alright.

    Breaking

    Pak 246-5

Babar Azam is leaving the field. He gets a round of applause as he departs, still pressing the bag of ice onto his arm. He could barely grip the bat.

Mohammad Amir, up in the dressing room, has just strapped on his arm guard.

Babar Azam's forearm is getting a good icing, while Stuart Broad is having a shadow bat and demonstrating something to Ben Stokes.

Babar is still in some discomfort. The physio takes the ice off his wrist/forearm and immediately puts it back on.

That could be wrist - what's that called, that bony bit, is it the scaphoid? That will be sore.
