Harry Watt: This sums Root's captaincy up. Just 8 overs in and we have Wood bowling bouncers and the spinner on. Why try plan D and E when plan A should still be the option? Pakistan bowled excellently by threatening the stumps. Root has no patience at all

Dominic Ward: We might have just hit peak Lord’s. Instead of the usual blend of posh pork pies and prawn sandwiches, the lads in front of me have donned rubber gloves and are unloading their cool bag of lemon wedges and oysters, whilst quaffing on something fizzy. Bravo.

    Need 8 more to win

Joe Root is in at silly point for Mark Wood, and ends up watching the ball get punched past him for three by Haris Sohail.

Alastair Cook is back at short leg, and jumps to avoid a full-blooded thwack from Imam-ul-Haq.

Pakistan's total is down to single figures.

I like the look of this Haris Sohail - he looks a really class player. He fancies a big lunch. He's had a look at the menu and he wants an extra 10 minutes at it.

  5. Pak 50-1published at 11 overs

    Need 14 more to win

    Shot!

Full from Dom Bess, and Haris Sohail uses his feet to push the ball back down the ground for four. And again! A half-volley, given the most elegant of treatment.

Trevor Bayliss has coached England in 57 one-day internationals. They have won 38.

This is his 44th Test - they have won 15 and lost 20.

  7. Pak 42-1published at 10 overs

    Imam 13, Sohail 20

John Emburey is watching on as Mark Wood continues, with short ball after short ball coming Imam-ul-Haq's way.

The deliveries rise up on the batsman but he gets his hands out of the way and plays the ball safely down to the ground.

I'd much rather discuss Robbie's breakfast than England's performance. Overall, a solid effort, though more butter needed on the toast and a drop more milk in the tea. The bacon and tomato look terrific.

  9. Pak 42-1published at 9 overs

    Need 22 more to win

Shot! A dreamy drive from Sohail Haris, picking up a floaty delivery from Dom Bess that just misses the rough and sits up nicely for the batsman.

  10. 'England not as good as they think they are'published at 12:13 British Summer Time 27 May 2018

There seems to be something lacking. All these guys are talented cricketers but it's not coming together. They are not getting the performances out on the park.

We might not be quite as good as we think we are...

Mark Wood, looking totally downcast, takes his hat from the umpire and jogs down to his fielding position.

His final short ball then was an absolute beauty, and not even that could raise a smile.

  12. Pak 36-1published at 8 overs

Whoops. Mark Wood takes a tumble in his follow through, his foot getting stuck as he releases the ball.

Wood persists with a short ball tactic, and Imam-ul-Haq sways out of the way, the ball rising and sliding past his helmet. Just one from the over.

Chris Ward:I'd love to know what England's record is with Root batting at 3 and at 4. For all these demands he bats at 3 if it doesn't benefit the team then what's the point?

More turn for Dom Bess and it wrongfoots everyone, the ball bouncing off the tip of Jonny Bairstow's gloves and over the head of slip for three byes.

    Hello!

There's turn there for Dom Bess, the ball spinning away from Imam-ul-Haq as he aims a big drive at the third ball of the over. Bess spears the next one down leg, though, and Imam helps it on its way for four.

Joe Gibney: England are conveniently going to lose in time for us all to watch the Indian Premier League final. Been out-batted, out-bowled, out-fielded, and out-coached by Pakistan. All eyes now on future of Trevor Bayliss because England are not improving.

Grant Kennett: Ashamed to be an @englandcricket fan. Not only is it a disgrace that our summer consists of just four Test matches, but the players really are not switched on to this format anymore. The ECB and the players now show a distinct disrespect for the game we love.

  20. Pak 27-1published at 6 overs

    Sohail 12, Imam 9

Insult to injury for Stuart Broad, as Haris Sohail opens the face of the bat and crashes the ball through the covers for four.

Broad chunters, and Sohail leaves the rest of the over well alone.
