The last time England lost the first Test of a summer, regardless of what month it began, was in 1995 against West Indies. In the 22 years since then England have won 16 and drawn six.

  2. Pak 23-1published at 5.3 overs

Close - but through fourth slip and away for four!

Haris Sohail flashes hard at an outswinger from Stuart Broad, but even Ben Stokes, with all his brilliance in the field, can't get a fingertip near that. Broad turns away in disgust.

Here's the only thing for England to smile about this morning - James Anderson dismissing Azhar Ali in the second over of Pakistan's innings.

  4. Pak 19-1published at 5 overs

    Need 45 more to win

Not a smile to be seen on the England balcony. Paul Farbrace has his chin resting on his hand, while Trevor Bayliss is head down, staring at the floor.

Imam-ul-Haq mistimes a drive but, courtesy of some good running, manages to add three to the total.

  6. Pak 14-1published at 4 overs

Stuart Broad beats Sohail Haris' outside edge with a fine final delivery, as he works his way through a tidy maiden.

Look at the England names on the teamsheet. Anderson, Broad, Cook, Root, Bairstow, Stokes, Buttler.

That amount of talent should not be producing these kind of performances. You look at the team and there is something seriously wrong with their thinking.

If they are using data to pick the team, the opening partnership of Cook and Stoneman cannot walk out at Headingley.

  8. Pak 14-1published at 3 overs

    Need 50 to win

You do wonder what England are doing to do when James Anderson retires. Other than fire up the cloning machine.

Haris Sohail is the new man in, and he's off the mark with a flick off the hip for two.

    Azhar b Anderson 4 (Pak 12-1)

    Ooft!

That's a good one from James Anderson, maybe just holding up a touch in the pitch, as he gets the ball to move back into Azhar Ali and crack his off stump out of the ground. A glorious delivery. Even Azhar nods his appreciation as he departs.

I know England have been beaten at home in recent years but I've not seen many better performances than this. Pakistan have changed tactics subtly to every single player which shows that they have done a lot of preparation. You are looking at a team who are thoroughly prepared and have done a lot of work on their skills.

Stuart Broad will open from the Nursery End.

What do England do for Headingley? Do you drop Mark Stoneman, and give someone one Test before India rock up? Do you shuffle about the batting order once again?

Small man Peaky: I would say that losing this Test in such a pathetic manner will force England to change. But this malaise and unwillingness/inability to change seems to be set deep. England have been on a slide since 2011. This Pakistan team on the other hand... young and exciting.

John Wells: Another day, another England batting collapse, Stuart Board it’s time to move on, offers nothing to this England team with either ball or bat now.

City obsessed: I can recall some truly awful England Test sides from the nineties, but this current one is right up there with the bat. Absolute shambles game after game after game.

  15. Pak 6-0published at 1 over

There's a 12th man on - Ben Curran, brother of Sam and Tom, is on the field in place of Mark Wood.

The ball is still keeping low, and Azhar Ali leaves well alone. James Anderson strays onto the pads, and Pakistan jog two byes to get their innings under way. And that's four! An outside edge trickles off the edge of Azhar Ali's bat and down to the boundary.

That was quick wasn't it? I didn't see that coming, I expected England to at least bat for an hour or so. The Jos Buttler dismissal was the key one but you have to give Pakistan all the credit in the world.

  17. Pak 0-0published at 0.1 overs

    Target 64

It's only the morning of day four, and this Test is all but finished.

James Andesron comes tearing in, and his first delivery keeps a little low to Azhar Ali, who defends.

Imam-ul-Haq, recovered from an earlier blow to the midriff, makes his way onto the field, followed by Azhar Ali.

England have had great individual performances in recent years, have won Test matches, but they have been guilty of not playing collectively as a group for a few years now. They are generally 50-3, 100-4.

How do you get out of it? The individuals have to look at themselves.
