Root's shaking his head. He's frustrated with himself. It was a tempting delivery from Amir and Root got the finest of edges through to Sarfraz.

Root (45), Malan (28) & Bairstow (21) waste good starts

Just when he was looking at his impish, busy best, Joe's got to go.
Mohammad Amir had beaten the outside edge of Root's bat a couple of times but this time he tickles the willow and Sarfraz Ahmed takes the catch behind.
Excellent use of the angle from over the wicket by Amir, who found the ideal line and length to tempt Root into driving at it.

Dom Bess has made his new England sweater filthy.

Joe Root unfurls another deft wristy flick through mid-wicket to scamper another three. Good, positive running by this pair so far.
Oops, nearly curse of the live texter as Root takes off on a risky single and Bess has to dive in. The throw missed but a direct hit would've been very close.

Dan Smith: Bess playing some cover drive shots Geoffrey would be proud of.
That's surely a much too expansive shot for Geoffrey. Who has the best cover drive in cricket at moment? And what about in England history? Ian Bell, right?

Bess scores in similar regions to Root. He likes to open the face a little bit and drive through the off side. He won't reject scoring opportunities, and he'll be loving it. It's always so frustrating as a bowler if you're out there and can't get a nightwatchman out, although Bess is a high quality nightwatchman.
Root 41, Bess 11
Amir swings it in towards Root's pads but the England skipper manages to clip it away for a single.
Bess takes guard outside his crease to Amir, with a short leg now in place after he popped up a Hasan short ball in the previous over.
Amir duly goes to the bouncer and strikes Bess on the shoulder as the England spinner turns. No flinching there though as Bess shrugs it off.

Do we know that Bess is definitely a nightwatchman? After the way he played at Lord's...

That's a very good stop. It bounced high and ended up like a goalkeeper, having to parry it. Usually at Headingley, if you get these bowlers sending a bouncer down at you, then you're winning. You don't want to be doing that here.
Joe Root on the cover drive but that's a good stop and the England skipper can only pick up one.
Not the worst result getting Dom Bess back on strike, mind. The nightwatchman uppercuts a Hasan Ali short ball away for four.
Runs flowing for England since day two finally got under way.
There are going to be so many of these sort of signs during the 2019 Ashes...

Bess' greatest asset is that he's fearless. He doesn't worry about this being a Test match.

Hello! Dom Bess fancies himself as England's regular Test match number four.
That is an exquisite cover drive, right out of the Ian Bell textbook, on the front foot and caressing it to the boundary.
Mohammad Amir has a response though, firing the last ball just past the outside edge of Bess' bat.

Bess was a bit slow to respond. He didn't even run his bat in, for some peculiar reason. That was quite comical, in a way, but these runs are mounting up quickly.

That was all a bit shambolic - and Amir is furious.
A slightly ropey start from Pakistan continues as they concede some farcical overthrows - the ball rebounding away off the ankle of a fielder trying to back up, allowing Joe Root to pick up three for just a tap into the off side.

Bess will be relishing this. His instincts are aggressive. He played very well in the second innings at Lord's.

Dom Bess gets off the mark by slicing it away off Hasan Ali down to third man for three.
The Somerset man impressed with the bat at Lord's - he'll be looking to stick around for a fair while with his captain.
Oh dear, Hasan fires the ball down leg, Sarfraz Ahmed misses it and it runs away to the fence for four byes. It wasn't the best delivery but the skipper-keeper was late on that one.
Joe Root then drives out through the covers for three, the ball not zipping over the outfield after the rain earlier.

Mohammad Amir has not had a lot of luck in this innings. That's happened to him rather a lot. Root slightly felt for that one.
Root 33, Bess 0
Ooh. Amir, over the wicket, gets Root playing and missing at one that leaves the England skipper on the angle.
Runs! Streaky ones, mind, as Root edges it down along the ground through vacant third slip and away to the fence. He played a couple of those deliberately last night but that was an error.
