Best cover drive in English history has to be David Gower, without a shadow of doubt.

Mohammad Amir has done all he can for now as he is replaced by Mohammad Abbas.
Ah, that's loose, sent down leg and flicking off the pads to the fence for four leg byes.
Not all drives are exquisite though.
This one undid Joe Root as he nicked Mohammad Amir behind to fall for 45.

Dan Grey: Ian Bell and Michael Vaughan would be my cover drive favourites (15:09). Bell also plays the most aesthetically-pleasing late cut that have ever passed my eyes.
Here is Dom Bess' entry for your consideration...

Get your sweater, lad. That's not good bowling. Amir is bowling really, really well at one end, and runs are leaking from the other.
Bess 19, Malan 6
Dawid Malan would like to submit an entry into the best cover drive in English cricket competition.
Hasan Ali slides it wide and Malan gets forward to crunch it through the covers for four.
That brings the 150 up for England.

He could have swatted that with a frying pan. You can't bowl like that.
Shot! Hasan Ali drops back of a length and Dom Bess gets up to punch it through the covers for four.

This is the opportunity for Pakistan with the new batsman there. Malan isn't flowing with ultra confidence and Amir has been bowling well. The captain's done well, too, and put a third slip in. I'd even put a gully in.
Dom Bess works one off his pads before Dawid Malan continues to feel his way into his innings with a couple of defensive strokes.

Bess did get an edge on that, and it's bounced a foot in front of Sarfraz.
Eek! Dom Bess edges it behind but it falls short of Sarfraz Ahmed.
Mohammad Amir continues to pose a real threat.
Geoffrey Boycott
Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special
Dom Bess looks a pretty accomplished late order batsman. He plays very well indeed. What England need more than anything is not a Moeen Ali style player who can bat - they need a match-winning spinner.
Dom Bess flicks it to square leg for one and Hasan Ali gets a go at new man Dawid Malan.
He gets one to swing back in late and not too far from off stump before Malan chases a very wide one last up. Play yourself in before trying that!

Patrick Brennan: Well that’s one way for Root to avoid falling between 50 and 100...

There's a technical thing with Malan - in Australia the ball bounces more but doesn't move sideways as much, and that seems to suit him. He doesn't get forward that much and he's a bit stiff armed, curiously.
Andrew Samson
BBC Test Match Special statistician
Dawid Malan averages 20.07 at home and 35.46 away from home. He's made just two fifties in 10 innings in England.

A brief roar from the Headingley crowd until they remember that although England's number five is coming out, the nightwatchman means it's Dawid Malan and not one of their own Jonny Bairstow.
Not that they don't cheer Malan too, mind.
The Middlesex man gets off the mark guiding through backward point for a couple.

That's a relief for Pakistan. England had scuttled along in no time, but they've got England's best player out - and one who was scoring pretty freely.
