Right, Pakistan need to throw something else at England and Sarfraz Ahmed turns to the leg-spin of Shadab Khan...

What a platform England have to capitalise on. There's still a lot of batting to come.
Scores level
Bang! Malan gets in a big stride and cracks it through the covers for four before rotating the strike.
Bess then drives through the covers again, making use of a misfield to scurry one and bring the scores level.
How big a lead can England build?

Andy Plowright: Best England hybrid batsman? Gower's cover drive, Boycott's defence, Robin Smith's square cut, Hutton's concentration, Hobb's sheer weight of runs, KP's switch hit, the good doctor's beard, Trott's crease marking, Gooch's pull shot to the quicks...

That is a classy shot from Dom Bess.

Oooh. Faheem Ashraf whips one past Dom Bess' wild flay, the ball hooping a bit after it passes the bat. Another play and miss next up.
A few nervy moments for Bess here - a loose drive brings an inside edge into the pads.
Ha, what nerves? Faheem offers a bit of width and Bess whacks a square drive to the boundary.

Dan Smith: Dom Bess is going to end up being a very good number five batsman, with Amar Virdi as our main spinner, for a good few years.
David Degville: Looks like England have found their new number four.

If Bess continues like this, he'll probably stay in the team ahead of Jack Leach. It balances the team much better when you have a spinner who can bat.

He's got a straight drive as well as a cover drive! Dom Bess moves his feet well and punches his hands through the line to clatter it down the ground for four.
Hmm, a thickish outside edge runs down to third man and Bess picks up one more. He plays the shot a few times once he gets down the other end, annoyed to have edged it.

Can you spot the dot in the sky over the half-constructed stand? Someone, possibly a TV company, is flying a drone over Headingley.

David Beckett: I'm not sure if I would want Dom Bess to become the next Steve Smith or the next Shane Warne. Which would England want, or currently need, more?
Warne, surely?
Faheem Ashraf resumes after drinks with a tidy maiden that Dawid Malan calmly defends.

Rajan: Kohli for best cover drive currently - pick from his two different styles of playing it... orthodox checked and slap. Difficult to better Sangakkara for best ever.
We're all enjoying Dom Bess' earlier cover drive and reminiscing on the best examples of the shot in cricket history.
Well here is Dawid Malan getting in on the act...

I don't see how Pakistan are going to bowl England out. The ball isn't doing anything.

England obviously have the capacity to make a right mess of this, but Dom Bess and Dawid Malan look entirely untroubled out there, with the ball showing very little movement through the air or off the seam.
A couple more to the total and that'll be drinks.

No-one else is willing to jinx it so I will - Bess is the new Steve Smith. Average spinner turns into world's greatest batsman.

It is Boycottian defence from Dom Bess.
