Everyone will be worried about playing England in England. They will study and come up with plans, but they won't be confident. We used to be like that when we played Australia and that is half the battle. They have put a marker down to the rest of the world. No one will want to play them. They have to be one of the firm favourites for the World Cup.

  3. 'We were relentless'published at 21:28 British Summer Time 19 June 2018

England captain Eoin Morgan, speaking on Sky Sports: "We're certainly very proud. The intensity was of a different level to anything we've produced in the last three years, it was as close to a complete performance as we've ever had. We were relentless.

"The top three wee absolutely outstanding, they stuck to our mantra and are an outstanding asset to have. We have guys missing out who could be in the playing 11 and it's a nice place to be with the World Cup next year.

"When we get to Durham we'll reassess how the guys have travelled. Our batting unit is settled but with bowlers it will be a case of assessing how we use them in Durham and Manchester.

"We need to be on top of our game in case anything changes. The 50-over game has moved forward dramatically but we've put ourselves in a position to adapt wherever we've gone and if we keep that between here and next year we'll be in a good place."

  4. Rashid's fantastic fourpublished at 21:24 British Summer Time 19 June 2018

Adil Rashid bowled superbly, taking 4-47 off his 10 overs.

Here are all the leg-spinner's wickets, including the final one of Billy Stanlake to clinch victory...

Australia made a rapid start in reply (they could hardly do anything else needing 482 for victory).

But then Moeen Ali got into the action, taking this catch to remove D'Arcy Short for 15...

...before completing this simple caught and bowled chance to dismiss Travis Head for a fine fifty...

...and getting his second wicket as he had Shaun Marsh caught for 24...

Eoin Morgan is responsible for this. In the World Cup he was a new captain and didn't have his say. Morgan saw how Australia and New Zealand were playing and that is what he wanted to do. They tore up the rule book and said "now we're an aggressive team".

Not everyone was exactly thrilled to see England rack up nearly 500 (and, no, not all of those dissenters are Australian).

India great Sourva Ganguly was worried about what it said about the balance between bat and ball, as was England bowler James Anderson on Test Match Special.

Still, what a tremendous achievement by a prodigiously talented batting line-up, surpassing their own previous mark of 444-3 against Pakistan in 2016.

Far too many highlights to bring you from the England innings.

Their record 481-6 is probably best summed up by the 21 sixes they hit...

And the two centurions of course. Here are the moments Jonny Bairstow and Alex Hales went to three figures...

  9. 'Close to perfect'published at 21:15 British Summer Time 19 June 2018

England captain Eoin Morgan tells BBC Sport: "I think it's as close as we've ever been to a perfect day. It's as complete as performance as we've produced over the past three years. Everybody needs to be credited. The level of intensity is something we haven't reached before. With the ball and the field there was no let-up. It's a huge credit to the guys. Being 2-0 up and trying to clinch the series, it's an important win for us.

"At one stage we looked like we could get close to 500, so we wanted to take advantage of that.

"If we continue to improve at the rate we have in the past three years, we'll put ourselves in the best possible position to win the World Cup."

And what did Tim Paine's opposite number Eoin Morgan, who hit a superb 67 off 30 balls, make of all that?

I'm going to say it, but I felt sorry for Australia team today. I never thought I'd say that about about an Australian cricket team.

  12. 'We're a long way off'published at 21:12 British Summer Time 19 June 2018

Australia captain Tim Paine told BBC Sport: "We're a long way off. England are red hot, the best team in the world. Everyone has a plan for the World Cup. We have six guys to come back into this squad. Whereas today was as tough as it gets, today was the best place for our young team to learn.

"The wicket played well throughout. We can't use what we did first as an excuse. We didn't execute with the ball. It's one of those days. We have to learn and get better.

"We're lucky to be playing for Australia. We have some young guys who want to show they can mix it with the big boys. We want to push England right to the wire."

A reminder: Tim Paine won the toss and elected to bowl earlier.

What is the Australia captain thinking now?

Alex Hales tells BBC Sport: "Today is as good as it gets, both personally and for the team.

"To get a score like that on my home ground in a series-clinching ground is a special feeling.

"We know the damage we can do at the ground, we know if we get in we can do special things.

"All I can do at the moment is keep knocking on the door. I'm not hiding away from my place being vulnerable at the moment, but it's up to me to play as well as I can."

  16. Hales named MOTMpublished at 21:08 British Summer Time 19 June 2018

A few candidates but Notts favourite Alex Hales is named man of the match for his superb 147 on his home ground.

Jonny Bairstow tells BBC Sport: "We weren't playing rash shots, there were maidens in there as well. It wasn't crash, bang, wallop all the way through. It was great fun and we got a little luck along the way. I'm really pleased with the way I'm striking the ball at the moment.

"It's good for us after the criticism we've had. It's not a mismatch. Australia are still a very good team. It was tough. The approach is to win the next game. We'll rest up tonight with big smiles and we'll go again."
