  1. 100 runs

100 for Alex Halespublished at 37.5 overs

    Eng 339-3

What a way to reach a ton.

Alex Hales plays about four strokes at a Jhye Richardson slower ball, eventually getting a bottom edge past wicketkeeper Tim Paine and to the very fine leg boundary. A sixth ODI hundred for Hales, reached in only 62 balls.

It's difficult to keep up with the hitting prowess set by Bairstow, Roy and Hales. It's a good catch in the end. You can't expect England to keep up the rate and get 500. The 444-3 is on the cards but I'm expecting something like 410/420.

  3. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 37.3 overs

    Buttler c Finch b J Richardson 11 (Eng 335-3)

There will be no Jos Buttler pyrotechnics today and England's quest for something record-breaking takes a mini-blow. Buttler tries to hammer a Jhye Richardson slower ball, sending the white leather miles and miles into the Nottingham sky. Aaron Finch, at long-on, has an eternity to think about it, but does well to take the catch above his head.

Richard Gallagher: This is getting unfair. Can they send some sandpaper out with the drinks?

  5. Eng 334-2published at 37 overs

    Hales 95, Buttler 11

Before the start of this over, Ashton Agar hadn't conceded a boundary in 11 deliveries and he'd taken the wicket of Jonny Bairstow. Absolutely miserly in the context. He's firing it into the pads, no air, no turn. Another one slips by without the ball crossing the ropes. Still seven from it, mind. Alex Hales is one blow from a ton.

That is phenomenal from Jos Buttler. It's a head-high bouncer just outside off stump. When you can play a pull shot like that, who needs the ramp shot?!

  7. 6 runs

    Eng 327-2published at 36 overs

    Hales 91, Buttler 8

The Bairstow dismissal means that Jason Roy's England record of 180 is safe for another hour or so at least. Alex Hales almost clips Billy Stanlake to mid-wicket, but it's past the dive of the fielder and away to the boundary for four. Jos Buttler tries a ramp, misses, but gets into his stride with a hook for six that's put down in the crowd. There's a Lincoln City banner in the front row. Not something you see every day.

This is a good decision to send in Jos Buttler now. He has a little bit of time to assess the pitch.

  9. Eng 314-2published at 35 overs

The crowd were chanting "Rooooot", but England have actually promoted Jos Buttler. Imagine how that must feel as fielding side. You've conceded 300-plus inside 35 overs and Jos Buttler strolls to the middle.

It wasn't a particularly good delivery at all but Jonny Bairstow has just picked out the man.

That's an innings that everyone here will remember for a long, long time.

  11. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 34.1 overs

    Bairstow c J Richardson b Agar 139 (Eng 310-2)

Gone. Not a mistake. England have lost a wicket.

Jonny Bairstow has drowned in honey, nailing a half-tracker from Ashton Agar straight at deep square leg. It's a good catch from Jhye Richardson, because that was travelling fast enough to take him into the front row.

Bairstow gets a great reception. He walks off slowly, taking it in, wearing a huge smile through that ginger beard. Incredible knock.

Benjamin Wilson: Looking forward to when England decide to cut loose. I hate these boring middle overs...

  13. Eng 310-1published at 34 overs

You say that, but Hales has 84 from 52 balls. Billy Stanlake, taller than a tree and with the haircut of a solider, briefly foxes Hales, who twice cloths the ball into the leg side. Both times it falls short of the fielders, like Hales is teasing them. This stand is worth 151, coming at better than 10 an over.

Zak Dunstan: What a performance so far by England, but there's a small part of me that wishes Buttler had come in at 3... No offence to Hales who's batted beautifully but Buttler could have scored 200 today given time.

Still round the wicket. Four. They might get 600.

They've all had a breather during drinks, big Billy Stanlake has come back in and Alex Hales has smashed him away.

  17. 6 runs

Billy Stanlake tries something different, round the wicket. Alex Hales tries something similar - belting it for six. 300 up.

It's true there is not much margin for error against these batsmen, but Australia haven't bowled well either. They've sent down some wide ones and poor short balls. Jonny Bairstow looks like he's having a net.
