That is a massive, massive wicket. England will have to dig deep to get to 300 now. With Buttler at the crease, 350 was possible.

  2. wicket

    Buttler c Dhoni b Yadav 4 (Eng 214-5)

That control has just increased significantly, the menace of Buttler is swiftly curtailed. A flat-footed drive and a thick edge, gleefully snaffled by the evergreen Dhoni, his 300th catch in ODIs.

My gut feeling is that India have a measure of control on the game here.

Pandya in for his eighth over, Kuldeep still with three in reserve. No reviews yet, both teams still with one up their sleeves. Root has a sleeveless sweater over his long sleeves, while Buttler has opted for the short sleeve. Root angles the bat to collect his sixth boundary.

Earlier on, I mentioned that an Indian mobile phone company was advertising at St John's Wood tube station. The same company was handing out Virat Kohli masks, which I planned to stick on each member of the TMS team. They were confiscated at the gate. At the same time, I heard one chap in an India shirt ask his son: "Who is that?"

Virat Kohli does not have to do anything to inspire a roar of appreciation from the India supporters, but a diving stop prompts euphoria. There is another fine diving stop from KL Rahul on the other side of the wicket to also prevent runs and after that impressive fielding, only one run results from the Yadav over.

It's not a belter of a pitch today. I don't think it's as free-scoring as it was at Trent Bridge.

A warm reception for Jos Buttler and England's big-hitting wicketkeeper will have 16 overs to try and propel his team to a total that will provide some form of test for the might of the Indian batting line-up.

A decent delivery - pitched on the stumps and moved down the hill. He's been dismissed by an orthodox seaming delivery.

  10. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 33.5 overs

    Stokes c Dhoni b Pandya 5 (Eng 203-4)

A subdued dismissal, it seem to catch everyone off guard, particularly Stokes, who has nibbled a wide one through to the keeper to give Pandya his first wicket. Seems like a character, the India seamer, he "gives it the Gangnam" with a lasso gesture. Stokes has been strangled out, certainly.

Kuldeep bowls a nice trajectory. He bowls an awkward length - you don't know whether to get forward or back. There's some fizz and if you don't get there to meet it, you're in trouble.

  12. drinks break

    Drinks breakpublished at 33 overs

    Eng 200-3

Deftly-played by Root, a reverse paddle at Kuldeep and it has come off the toe of the bat. Dhoni may have a bit more salt than pepper in the beard these days but he is still like a coiled spring behind the stumps and anticipates the shot, but cannot quite reach it and it rolls away to the third man boundary for Root's fifth four. The 200 up and it's time for a drink, I'll have a low-calorie orange.

Jack Mendel: Morgan nearly gets caught getting to 50. Then does get caught immediately after. Irresponsible shot given that he and Root have used up about 15 overs building that partnership. If you win the toss and bat, and get to 50, got to be looking at 100.

  14. Eng 192-3published at 32 overs

    Root 55, Stokes 2

Pandya is back from the Pavilion End, a bustling run but a modest pace of around 81mph. A little bit of fair weather cloud around but no chance of rain. Stokes keeps the strike with a neat leg glance for a single and will now face Kuldeep.

The full toss from the leg-spinner is often a wicket-taking delivery.

So perhaps Kuldeep really does have a hold on the England batsmen, even his full tosses are taking wickets. Ben Stokes is the new batsman, after that uncharacteristically stuttering fifty the other day, but he is yet to face as the batsmen crossed.

But he's gone this time, he has hoicked a full toss straight to the deep mid-wicket fielder, ending a partnership of 103.

A 38th ODI fifty for the England captain, Morgan down the wicket again to Kuldeep and it lands safely.
