  1. Eng 67-3published at 25.2 overs

Dawid Malan charges down the pitch and tries to flick through leg, misses and the ball strikes his pad.

Ravichandran Ashwin appeals heartily but umpire Chris Gaffaney isn't interested.

Malan was a mile down the pitch - you'd never get that given.

Ball tracking shows it was just clipping leg on umpire's call anyway.

When you are in this situation as a team you can be guilty of looking at the end product of the overall total rather than just think about partnerships. If England get one of over 100 it will go a long way to winning this game. Two partnerships from here gets them a lead of 250 and that will be plenty.

Ishant Sharma over-pitches a tad and Jonny Bairstow drives it out square for a couple.

Just steady accumulation from this pair but that's all that's needed right now after England's early wobbles.

Kohli just had to tell off one of his fielders for paying too much attention to the crowd in the Hollies, rather than listening to his fielding instructions.

It's got to be pretty hard to concentrate when there is a war between the United States and North Korea going on in the stands, to be fair.

    Did this carry?

  6. Eng 65-3published at 24 overs

Dawid Malan started off looking to be positive but he's shelved his attacking instincts well since then - seeing off another maiden from Ashwin, picking the off-break and leaving it smartly when it's wide enough.

Just tuned in to TMS to hear Aggers say 'Bairstow hits to mid wicket towards Kim Jong-un'? Not the most mobile 12th man I can think of.

Ishant Sharma, sporting a haircut that makes him look like the bassist in an emo-pop punk band when it falls forward, continues.

Short and wide and Bairstow batters it just in front of point for four.

Another poor ball is also dispatched by Bairstow, slicing it up and over down to the third man boundary for four.

Kim Jong-un looks very enthusiastic. I didn't know he was a cricket fan.

A man wearing a Donald Trump mask (while also wearing a Northampton Saints shirt) is now walking across the front the of the stand where Kim Jong-un and his bodyguards are sitting.

The North Korea leader reaches out and pretends to shoot Trump with his rocket.

Kim Jong-il was a big fan of basketball and it turns out his son Kim Jong-un is partial to a bit of cricket.

The North Korea dictator has just entered Edgbaston, carrying a rocket and surrounded by bodyguards.

It is, of course, a bloke dressed like the despot, not the man himself.

    Ishant Sharma

I watched Ishant bowling a lot this morning, and he overstepped every single time. First ball this morning... No ball. No idea why players don’t practice as they’d bowl.

Dawid Malan deals better with Ishant Sharma this time, albeit slightly miscuing a pull short for one.

Bairstow is going to be a big key here because he is going to attack.

    Malan 17, Bairstow 9

Ashwin drops short and Bairstow clatters a sweep straight into Murali Vijay under the lid at short leg, the ball almost looping up for Dinesh Karthik to catch.

No danger over the other side though - Bairstow marmalises a short, wide one between point and cover.

But then again Bairstow tries that flick round the corner, with leg slip waiting. Time to shelve that shot.

They are always given not-out as soon as they go upstairs. I am pretty sure it bounced in the fingers, not on the grass.

If Shikhar Dhawan had have thrown the ball up in the air and celebrated then the soft signal would have been out.

  19. Not outpublished at 19 overs

    Eng 52-3

Sure enough, the third umpire goes with the soft signal and Dawid Malan is not out.

A big let off - that was a big edge after playing and missing at the previous two balls.

Not just Ashwin to be wary of for England. A top first over by Ishant Sharma there.

  20. Postpublished at 12:06 British Summer Time 3 August 2018

It's very tight - it perhaps just brushed the grass as it reached Dhawan's hands.

The fact India and the umpires weren't sure means the third umpire is very unlikely to overturn the soft signal.
