  1. Eng 37-2published at 14 overs

Hmm. Ashwin comes round the wicket to the right-handed Root - it's an easy line for the England captain to play and he knocks it away for one.

Ashwin returns over the wicket to Root but bowls it short and Root punches it superbly off the back foot through the covers for four.

  2. Postpublished at 11:38 British Summer Time 3 August 2018

    Ravichandran Ashwin's average against right-handers is 31.39.

    To left-handers it's 19.39.

    And you can see why...

  3. Eng 31-2published at 13 overs

    Root 8, Malan 11

Joe Root sees off five accurate, if non-threatening, deliveries by Mohammed Shami before the India seamer strays onto the pads and Root clips it away for one.

Peter Eastwood: Malan will quickly win club cricketers over again if he keeps swinging like a rusty village number eight with an average in single figures. Proper batting.

I loved bowling when the pitch was like this. It is a square turner now.

Malan lets a couple of big turners well alone outside off before Ashwin strays full and is driven for a single.

Root rotates the strike and Ashwin then decides to go over the wicket at Malan, pushing one across and well beyond the outside edge.

    Phil Tufnell
Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

The dropped catch will be playing on Dawid Malan's mind - it cost England about 150 runs. He hasn't really cemented his place since that hundred in Australia so he's going to be under pressure. And who don't you want to be facing, when you're under pressure on a pitch that's turning? Ravi Ashwin.

There are just indications from how Malan has started that he is going to take the bowling on today.

  9. Eng 28-2published at 11 overs

Dawid Malan takes on the short ball and doesn't get hold of it but his pull shot lands safe.

The Middlesex man is certainly determined not to get bogged down today.

Mike Fisher: Have I missed a Jos Buttler update? Will he be padding up today? Could be pivotal

Buttler's X-ray showed he has not broken his finger and he returned to the field late yesterday, so we assume he will bat as normal today.

  11. Eng 27-2published at 10.1 overs

Eeek. Dawid Malan flays at a short and wide one, the ball just zipping past the top edge. Dinesh Karthik spills it behind anyway.

  13. Eng 27-2published at 10 overs

Dawid Malan plays Ashwin late and closer to his body, defending well and tucking off his pads for one.

  14. Postpublished at 11:24 British Summer Time 3 August 2018

Keaton Jennings perhaps played that a bit too far in front of his body, whereas other batsmen may have gone back to it or played it later, more under their eyes.

It was still a mighty fine delivery, though, Ashwin finding turn and dip.

    Jennings c Rahul b Ashwin 8 (Eng 18-2)

Ravichandran Ashwin really, really, really likes bowling to left-handers.

The India off-spinner puts it on a teasing length, finds a bit of bite and has Keaton Jennings pushing forward.

The ball catches the shoulder of Jennings' bat and KL Rahul completes a fine catch at gully.

Ashwin has seen off two left-handers and England still have five to come, starting with Dawid Malan up next...
