  1. Eng 71-5published at 30 overs

    Stokes 17 from 63 balls

Only a third of the way through our allotted overs for the day and we are half an hour into the second session. Captain Kohli is not concerned in the slightest and who can blame him, he is full of smiles in his dark shades. Stokes edges Ishant to the India captain but it falls well short.

This is not a campaign, honestly. Just the facts.

  3. Eng 71-5published at 29 overs

    Stokes 17, Moeen 0

Three slips and then a gap to the next man in the cordon as Shami shuffles in, sending them down deceptively quickly around 87mph. Patience from Stokes when it is outside the off stick and when it is on the pads he is able to work it for a single into the leg-side. Former Hampshire favourite Robin Smith, who used to own a fine wine bar near me in Sussex, is in attendance, a silver fox these days.

Philip Wiseman: Sat at my desk in Southampton worrying that I'll even get to see any cricket on day 3, which should be my first ever day at a Test.

  5. Eng 69-5published at 28 overs

    Ishant 1-7 from 7

Just the one over from Ashwin and it's Ishant who returns to test the left-handers with those away swingers of his. Ishant tries to tempt Stokes from round the wicket with the final delivery and beats the bat.

Martin Robert: So, we’re known for not being able to bat against spin, and Australia proved we can’t play against pace, now India showing we can’t deal with swing. Worrying.

  7. Eng 69-5published at 27 overs

    Stokes 16, Moeen 0

Four slips to greet Moeen but he calmly defends. Ian Bell-watch, he's made a century for Warwickshire in the Division Two match at Glamorgan

That is a poor because it wasn't a half-volley. It moves and Kohli took a fine catch - that ball was travelling. That was a shot of a man with too much confidence.

    Buttler c Kohli b Shami 21 (Eng 69-5)

A sharp chance at third slip and Kohli makes no mistake. Buttler, after his century at Trent Bridge, has had a first baller in the T20 and now a breezy 21.

England can try whatever line-up they want and try as many openers as they like but they are never going to work if Ramprakash and Bayliss are in charge of the Test team. They need to be moved on before they ruin the Test careers of Root, Bairstow, Stokes, Buttler etc...

    Run-rate 2.5

The first spin of the day which will improve a poor over-rate, with only 24 bowled before lunch. A slip and Shikhar Dhawan under the lid at short-leg for Ravichandran Ashwin but Stokes seizes on a short one and hammers it off the back foot to long-on for his second boundary.

As a Surrey supporter, could I be selfish and ask England not to pick Rory Burns just yet? Every other in-form opener that is lent to England is returned to their county broken - Haseem, Stoneman, Jennings - and I'd rather not add Burns to that list until England promise to take more care of him.

  13. Eng 61-4published at 25 overs

    Stokes 12, Buttler 17

Shami takes up the attack and squares up Buttler with a beauty on middle stump that swings away. Trying to whip it through the leg-side, Buttler gets a leading edge and it flies through the vacant gully region for his third boundary.

Well let's see what these two can do this afternoon Tommy. The partnership currently stands at 21, can they match their 169 from Trent Bridge? What's a good first-day total for England? The returning Moeen will be the next batsman. When do you think we will see him? All these questions will be resolved in due course but the umpires are out in the centre now and it looks a little overcast.

Tommy Butler: What’s really quite sad is that this England opener and continuous batting issue is that it’s now expected rather than a blip. Utter shambles from top to bottom. Cricket in need of an overhaul.

    Geoffrey Boycott
Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

It's puzzling because England have a batting coach - and I'm not just blaming Ramprakash - a head coach who was supposed to have been a batsman, played for New South Wales, and you wonder what they are doing.

They have all the internet to look back at. When Holding bowled me out in Barbados, I sat in a hotel room where they cut the video tape before sending it back for the highlights.

That reunited England's century partnership pair from Trent Bridge, Stokes and Jos Buttler, and the wicketkeeper had a reprieve on 11 when India keeper Rishabh Pant spilled one off Mohammed Shami which would have made it 53-5.

But in the 18th over Alastair Cook fell at third slip for 17 from 55 balls as England slipped to 36-4. England had only once lost their fourth wicket at home to India with fewer runs on the board...and that was in 1936.
