  1. Eng 89-6published at 37 overs

    Shami 2-28 from 11

Umpire Oxenford did indeed make it back to his mark in time for the re-start, so that's the end of that. Moeen made a double century and took eight wickets in the Championship against Yorkshire earlier this month but is beaten outside the off-stump by another excellent away-swinger from Shami, before shouldering arms to one that nips back in and narrowly over the timbers in the hazy afternoon sunshine.

    Eng 89-6

Curran has been on the winning side in all three of his Tests this summer and the 20-year-old fluently drives Ishant through the covers to collect two more. Time for a drink and umpire Oxenford is using the opportunity to leave the field for some reason.

I am a Warwickshire member currently in Colwyn Bay watching us play Glamorgan. I believe that Ian Bell went on for too long in an England shirt and am not a believer in taking backward steps either. However, this is some knock, on a pitch that is very hard to bat on. This is the best Ian Bell innings I've seen for some time. He seems a man on a mission.

  5. Eng 87-6published at 35 overs

    Shami 2-28 from 10 overs

Left-hander Sam Curran, who many felt should not have been left out at Trent Bridge, is confidently off the mark first ball with a quick single into the covers.

Ben Stokes was just a fraction late getting there. You can't criticise him too much, he's worked hard and just got out to a good ball from round the wicket.

There is no embarrassment getting out to a ball like that.

Stokes lbw Shami 23 (Eng 86-6)

It's three reds and Stokes rocks his head back in dismay. He battled hard for 79 deliveries but he is on his way.

Height might be an issue but he's given it out so it only has to be touching the top of the stumps now.

But this could be the end for Stokes. He has been given out lbw to Shami from round the wicket, but has asked to use England's final review.

You have to find five batsmen, not play a wicketkeeper at number four. The whole England set-up is confused before they bat and then when they bat, they're really confused.

I wonder what the directors at the counties think when England cannot find batsmen.

  12. Eng 85-5published at 34 overs

    Stokes 23, Moeen 4

Stokes takes a step down the wicket to combat Ishant from round the wicket and when it is wide he is quite content to shoulder arms. One cannot fly into flying, as Mr Nietzsche said.

I love Jos Buttler's stroke play but you cannot play that shot at 69-4.

Ben Stokes is showing fantastic application. He played straighter than Alastair Cook in the last Test. He's one of the most aggressive batsmen in the line-up but you have to play the situation. He did it in the last Test and he's doing it splendidly here.

  14. ouch!

    Eng 83-5published at 33 overs

Stokes advances and a crisply hit straight drive rattles the fingers of Shami, who is still wringing his bowling hand in anguish at the end of the over. He is given some form of cooling pack and a drink for his pains by the physio.

He's scored centuries in the 50-over and T20 as well this season though Ben. And he's still a class act don't you think?

I've just noticed the golf course next to the stadium. It's a 5,511-yard par-69 called Boundary Lakes and has USGA standard greens. It's a pay and play apparently so that sounds like a nice way to spend an afternoon. Plenty of movement still for Ishant but he's just straying into the danger zone from round the wicket in his follow through and umpire Dharmasena is keeping a watchful eye on him.

The pleasantness of the the surroundings is a complete contrast to the gloom of England's predicament. Southampton is part cricket match, part festival. Real ale is pulled from barrels as the smell of food wafts over the stands. The cuisine is actually a hipster's dream. Caribbean jerk, crispy duck, steak, luxurious vegie burgers.

  18. Eng 82-5published at 31 overs

    Stokes 21, Moeen 3

Moeen off the mark from his eighth delivery, guiding Shami safely backward of square for three and Stokes flicking the next one off his pads for his third boundary. Four more byes for England as it swings dramatically away wide of the wicketkeeper and beyond first slip.
