I do look at the England batting line-up and they have lost a lot of confidence. It has been happening for three or four years now. This has been about the 20th time we have seen a team that goes out when the ball is nibbling around and they are 80-6. They are always 30-3 whatever the conditions, then can that engine room get them out of trouble. Sam Curran the 20-year-old has just given them a sniff of half a decent score.

India seamer Jasprit Bumrah, speaking to Sky Sports: "I was sitting out in the first Two matches keeping an eye on what was working for England's bowlers and our bowlers.

"I tried to replicate that in the nets and and tried to do that in the match as well

"We wanted to bat but when we started to bowl there was a lot of seam and swing, more than we expected.

On dismissing Keaton Jennings: "It's always good when a plan works. I knew the ball was swinging so thought I'd try and inswinger to the left-hander, it was on line and I got the wicket."

England's batting woes should not detract from a superb bowling display by India though, with their seamers exploiting the swing and seam on offer throughout, even with the ball 60 overs old.

Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the bunch, taking 3-46, while Ishant Sharma was miserly in taking 2-26.

Ravichandran Ashwin and Mohammed Shami took two each as well, while Hardik Pandya picked up one.

I'm not saying Sam Curran should go to number three. Ben Stokes is trying his hardest to play late but it's very unnatural for him, what he wants to do is go at the ball whereas someone like Sam Curran looks a natural player, playing it late under his eyeline.

If he gets an opportunity to play the cut shot he plays it, then he gets a drive ball and commits to that, but when the ball is in a good area that a bowler at this level will bowl more often than not, he's got the ability to play nice and softly, nice and straight. He's the one that probably has the best technique. Whether it's just confidence we will have to wait and see.

Finally, the fun was over. Sam Curran bowled by Ravichandran Ashwin trying to heave some more quick runs.

But it was another fine knock by the 20-year-old all-rounder to get his side out of dire trouble, just as he did at Edgbaston to help England win the first Test.

England's opening bowlers James Anderson and Stuart Broad could not muster much in reply late on day one as India reached the close 19-0.

England's Sam Curran on Sky Sports: "It was good fun and we managed to get some good partnerships at the end. We managed to sneak up to 250, which was pretty positive in the end."

On England's approach with the ball: "We need to be as patient as possible. Hopefully I can take a few wickets tomorrow."

Adil Rashid fell cheaply, caught lbw for six...

But Stuart Broad stuck around in support of Sam Curran, bringing up a fifty partnership before he was pinned lbw by Jasprit Bumrah...

England's Sam Curran, who made 78, on Sky Sports: "India did bowl very well with the new ball.

"It swung more than we thought for the whole day, so that's pretty positive going into tomorrow. Sometimes you've got to accept that it's good bowling.

"The ball did a lot. I felt like there was a ball in that wicket to get me out, so it was almost counter-attack. It's the way I naturally play - I look to hit the ball.

"With the bowlers on our side, it's going to be an entertaining game."

The best technician is Sam Curran. He plays defensively naturally. He plays with hands that come back towards him so he plays it late and plays it softly. When he goes to attack, very much like Graham Thorpe used to be, he commits with the full flourish of the bat.

He looks naturally the best defensive player that England have had in this series. The rest of them still jab at the ball even in defence.

Sam Curran drove on though, reaching a fine fifty with a majestic six...

But then just as India started to look a little short of ideas, Moeen Ali top edged one off Ravichandran Ashwin when trying to sweep and Jasprit Bumrah took the catch...

If you look at every single day of this series it has had some fascinating periods. You feel there are going to be wickets tumbling and then you get a partnership from nowhere.

The way Curran and Moeen played, India started to chase it, I felt they got frustrated and a bit ragged in the field so Virat will feel they lost intensity. They should have bowled England out for 150.

Moeen and Curran took England through to 139-6 at tea with a fifty partnership, as the former looked to counter-attack, hitting two mighty sixes...

England were in the mire at 86-6.

Enter Moeen Ali and Sam Curran...

Ben Stokes continued to dig in well but was undone by a fine piece of swing bowling from round the wicket by Mohammed Shami.

The all-rounder reviewed but the decision stayed with the on-field umpire, leaving England with no reviews left.
