England just need to find a number three. And a one. And a two.
They've got plenty of sixes. It's like being dealt all the wrong cards.
A rare smile from R Ashwin, it's a rueful grin as Moeen offers no shot to one at 52mh that spins harmlessly away and wide of the off-stump. The spinner might have time for one or two more before the break.

Chris Briddon: Ironic that we've spent years looking for a new Botham to play at six and now we have a whole team of them but missing all the other spaces.

England coach Trevor Bayliss looks in good spirits as he watches on from the balcony in his floppy blue sun hat, although he rarely appears anything other than relaxed. He will not want to see many more of these from Bumrah, however, late swing away away from Moeen and in fact too much movement to catch the edge, the India seamers revelling in the sultry, overcast conditions.

Much as I admire Mark Ramprakash, as the notable batting prodigy that failed to make the step up to Test cricket, isn't it questionable that he should now be coaching other talented batsmen to do exactly what he couldn't - with the same results?

A little bit of turn for Ashwin and for once Curran does not time it as he tries to force a 59mph delivery away.

Can someone explain why the batting line up can't simply be more fluid? If we constantly collapse, why can't Root choose to come in at four, and if there's a 120-run opening stand, he can come in at three? Play the situation!

Prodigious shape from Bumrah again, it was swinging away from the left-hander and went even further away after pitching, Pant, sprawling across to fumble it in front of first slip's boots. Can these two entertaining stroke players keep in going until tea for England? Fifteen minutes until the interval.
Only six boundaries before lunch but Moeen and Curran have demonstrated some stylish strokeplay this afternoon.
Ashwin 0-6 from 2
Only the second over of the day for Ashwin, we are going to need to see rather more of him with a whopping 48 overs still scheduled to be bowled today. He's sending it down in the mid-50's-mph but England's left-handers watch him carefully as the partnership extends to 36.

How about this view? I'm still just inside the ground, my back to some black railings, peering through the trees. The bank slopes towards the stands, offering a view between the pavilion and the Colin Ingleby-Mackenzie Stand. A few folks sit on the grass, others are underneath the blue umbrella of the champagne bar.
Moeen 18, Curran 20
Bumrah back in the attack, that little skip at the start of his run and those straight angled arms at delivery. He has been up at 89mph already today but Moeen latches on to a short wide wide and carves it wristily off the back foot for four.
The India paceman beats him with a beautifully pitched away swinger that narrowly misses the target, causing captain Kohli to ruefully stroke his beard.

That is the shot of the day by Sam Curran. There haven't been many to choose from in this England innings but that was a cracker.
Moeen 14, Curran 20
Captain Kohli skips up the steps to the dressing room and he would have been proud to have played this shot from Curran, a sweetly-struck cut backward of square for four. The next ball from Pandya is punched down the ground for four more with a perfectly straight bat. A third four in the over, driving a wide one with a thick edge safely away to Third man, delightful stuff from the young left-hander.

Daniel Davies: I put a bet on Ben Stokes being top scorer this innings. At this point I hope I lose the money!
Moeen 14, Curran 6
The crowd has been quiet today, with rather ghostly silences at the fall of each wicket, but there is warm applause and even a wolf whistle or two as Moeen records the hundred with another thick edge safely through the gully region for his first boundary.
Here's the end of a patient innings of 23 from Stokes, the review proving fruitless.
Moeen 8, Curran 6
Pandya, who claimed a maiden five-for at Trent Bridge and added the wicket of Alastair Cook before lunch, returns with his large white wristband on his left hand and is stylishly driven through the covers for three by Curran, while Moeen maintains the momentum with a thick edge for three more.

We've had 37 overs and the ball is still doing plenty.
