I'd give Ravichandran Ashwin a bowl. I watched him in that last Test and because of his injury he couldn't pivot properly. But he's a good bowler and he bowls well at left-handers, so I'd give him the ball when it's nice and new.

Hardik Pandya swings it in and onto Ben Stokes' pads but it's down leg and deflects away for a leg-bye.

I'm in the seats outside pavilion. One chap has just returned from the bar carrying four pints on a metal tray. Is there any other ground that provides such civilised apparatus to help thirsty patrons?

  4. Eng 33-3published at 15.1 overs

Ben Stokes stays nicely balanced at the crease, clipping a full ball through mid-wicket for four.

A lovely way to get off the mark.

Keaton Jennings tries to play like Marcus Trescothick, when he is defending he withdraws the bat on the inside of the ball. Marcus was very good at it, this lad is a poor imitation. He is indecisive and you must be decisive with defensive shots.

    Bumrah 8-1-20-2

Jasprit Bumrah continues into his eighth over. I guess his run-up, which he walks half of, doesn't take too much out of him. The pace he generates from it is remarkable.

Alastair Cook just about judges a leave well against a ball that comes back in and zips past off-stump.

A maiden for Bumrah. England aren't even 30-3 yet, Michael.

Ben Stokes is the new man in but Alastair Cook will face new bowler Hardik Pandya, replacing Ishant Sharma.

Cook clips to long leg for a single and here is Stokes.

England have four batsmen who should be batting at six or seven.

Jonny shouldn't be batting four. His right position is behind Ben Stokes. These players can take the game away from you if the batsmen have set the scene.

Bairstow had left the ball before, which was an inswinger that missed the stumps. A good leave but close.

The next delivery pitched closer to the stumps and Bairstow played at it but the ball moved away.

The ball actually wobbled after taking the edge but Pant did well to take the catch.

That corridor, they will get themselves out because the defensive technique to stay in is pretty poor. We know about their shot-making because it is making us favourites for the World Cup but the Test team has gone backwards, the batting is rubbish.

Another fine delivery and England are in another fine mess.

Jasprit Bumrah gets it to nibble away down the corridor of uncertainly and Jonny Bairstow tries to play it straight.

But the promoted number four plays down slightly the wrong line and gets a fine edge on it through to Rishabh Pant.

A big appeal from India and no complaints from Bairstow, who trots off straight away.

Drinks break - Eng 26-2published at 12:03 British Summer Time 30 August 2018

Jonny Bairstow flicks an inwinger round the corner for one, leaving Alastair Cook four balls of Ishant Sharma to see off before drinks.

The India seamer looks to be tiring a touch and fires down a couple of wide ones.

The fifth ball tempts Cook into the the drive and it flies away, dropping just short of Ajinkya Rahane, who is at a close point/gully position.

Cook leaves the last one alone and that'll be drinks. Very much India's first hour of the Test.
