Keaton Jennings will never be good enough for Test cricket. He is barely good enough for county cricket. He averages 34 in first-class cricket and that is only because of one freak season for Durham. He should be dropped and be nowhere near an England squad again.

  2. Eng 15-1published at 7 overs

A leg-bye returns Alastair Cook to the strike and Jasprit Bumrah tries to get that big inswinger firing again.

He's off line with it though - the first slides way down leg and the second is straight enough for Cook to flick it fine for four.

Allow me to be the first person to say that Southampton is a lovely place to watch cricket. Intimate, leafy, all of the seats banking away from the ground creating a cricketing amphitheatre.

There are curiosities - all that goes with a busy hotel mixing with an international sporting event - but they add to the charm. Also, you can do a whole lap of the ground without having to take your eyes off the action, which provides the biggest tick of all.

Alastair Cook has faced over 26,000 balls now in Test cricket and batted for more than 608 hours.

  5. Eng 10-1published at 6 overs

Ishant Sharma sends down a yorker that Alastair Cook does well to jam hit bat down on in time.

Cook is happy to cover up and wait for the bad ball which finally arrives - Sharma sends it down wide and Cook slices it firmly away square for four.

I can't stop watching this and trying to figure out how it's happened...

The England batsmen are finding it difficult to move their feet to Bumrah.

  9. Eng 6-1published at 5 overs

    Cook 1, Root 4

That no-ball aside, it's a fine start by Jasprit Bumrah, who is posing problems to Joe Root.

Finally we have a replay with ball tracking and yep, that would have been overturned and Joe Root would have been out lbw for just two.

It pitched in line and was hitting the top of middle and leg stump.

A bad mistake by Jasprit Bumrah to overstep.

  11. Eng 6-1published at 4.3 overs

Joe Root clips the next ball into the leg side for two more.

  12. Not outpublished at 11:23 British Summer Time 30 August 2018

It looked very close but we won't even go to ball tracking right now because Jasprit Bumrah has planted his foot firmly over the white line.

A potential reprieve for Joe Root.

Oh, he's overstepped! This will be a no-ball.

Jasprit Bumrah gets one to angle back in and strike Joe Root's pads.

    Huge appeal but not given.

It looked close and India duly send it upstairs...

Ishant Sharma to have another go at Alastair Cook but the England opener leaves and defends well, locating his off-stump, to play out a maiden.

A different kind of delivery, but there are shades of Chris Cairns to Chris Read about that Jennings dismissal. On that occasion, Read was deceived. Here, I reckon Jennings hasn't seen it.

That is a pickled mind. The questions about Jennings at this level will continue.

  20. Postpublished at 11:17 British Summer Time 30 August 2018

It is a fantastic delivery by Bumrah but I still think Jennings should be far more prepared for one coming back into him. It's ridiculous to assume every ball would just go across - even when leaving the ones that did, his balance looked to be off.

It's difficult to see how Jennings can score runs at this level right now, all the technical flaws in his game seem to have returned.
