Jennings got 112 in his first Test match, but in 18 innings since then he has averaged just 16.94 - that is the joint second lowest sequence of 18 innings by an England opener. Mark Butcher had one of 16.72.

    Cook 15, Bairstow 4

Jonny Bairstow drives away and scampers three runs.

Jasprit Bumrah goes back of a length and Alastair Cook flays at it. Not the best shot but it missed the edge.

Joe Root should have been lbw to Jasprit Bumrah but the India seamer overstepped...

But Root then was out lbw to Ishant Sharma...

It's what we have seen so far in this series. The first 10 overs has been seam and nibble and then it has started to swing.

  6. Eng 21-2published at 10 overs

    Ishant 5-3-6-1

Jonny Bairstow is staying very leg side, exposing all three stumps and standing very upright. This stance got him into trouble when he nicked off in the first Test to ball that actually swung in.

Ishant Sharma gets a few to move in before an absolute hooper that zips between the huge gap between bat and pad and somehow just missed the top of the stumps.

Rishabh Pant makes a fine diving stop behind the stumps as the ball kept moving in the air.

Not very convincing so far by Bairstow. Another maiden for Ishant.

Cook's movement has been good in most of his innings in this series. There have been times in his career when he looked as though he could have been out at any minute.

  9. Eng 21-2published at 9 overs

Jasprit Bumrah over-pitches and Alastair Cook squeezes it between the cordon and point for his third four of the morning.

Bumrah replies to an absolute peach to finish, nipping away off the seam from round the wicket to beat Cook's outside edge.

India have bowled good lines and lengths and have really asked questions of the England batsmen. You would expect that to continue for a while so you are going to have to be strong in mentality and technique.

I just struggle to see how Keaton Jennings can score runs at Test level.

He can't see off enough quality bowling to wait for the bad ball and put that away. His lack of footwork and tendency to fend at balls he could leave on length makes him a candidate to nick off.

And today he took the instruction to leave as much as possible too far - never looking to play a ball that was striking middle stump.

Will the hosts stick with him for the fifth Test?

  12. Eng 17-2published at 8 overs

Jonny Bairstow taps it away for a quick single to get off the mark.

Alastair Cook then dabs into the off side for another.

Ishant Sharma now has 250 wickets - and 50 against England. He's the seventh India bowler to reach 250 and only the third seamer.

There Will Be Adequate Food: Root at three is like having Mohamed Salah in goal. It's a joke. Root is our best runscorer, not our best technician.

Jonny Bairstow is in at his new position of four in just the eight over.

His first delivery loops up off the pad, with a short leg in for the Yorkshireman.

How will that broken finger on his left hand hold up?

The inswing does for Root, he gets too far over. Because he falls over to the off side he has just lost his balance. A perfect start for India. You feel it's going to be a beautiful batting wicket this afternoon but you could lose three or four this morning.

Root lbw Ishant 4 (Eng 15-2)

No reprieve for Joe Root this time.

It's another piece of fine swing bowling by India, this time by Ishant Sharma, pitching it very full and allowing the ball to hoop in to the right-hander.

Root misses it and is struck in line, with ball tracking showing it was going on to hit middle and leg.

Kumar Dharmasena stays with his original decision and England are in the mire.

He needed the advice of Cook to ask for it. It's not a no-ball.
