Despite England's eagerness, Ravi Jadeja teases Ben Stokes out of the rough that lies outside the left-hander's off stump. Adil Rashid watches on from behind a laptop screen. The stands inside The Oval look to have emptied a touch. The post-Cook effect.

I once missed Surrey 14 all out. I thought I would go to the second day of Essex v Surrey match (May 1983). Unfortunately my mother convinced me I would be better off going to the third day as "nothing ever happens on the second day of a county match"...

Alastair Cook's old Essex mucker James Foster has been with the England team for this match. They are sitting next to each other in the dressing room, Foster giving Cook an affectionate rub on the back of the neck. Ben Stokes flays Shami through the covers for four. Twice. Virat Kohli looks murderous.

Ravi Jadeja shares the new ball. Handy pre-Sri Lanka practice for England, a spinner with the new nut. Jonny Bairstow isn't really fussed what he's bowling with - it's all gotta go. A one-bounce four over mid-on.

If you were going to write it - James Anderson passes Glenn McGrath by dismissing Virat Kohli, caught by Alastair Cook at first slip.

The history and emotion are gone for now. There's a Test match to be won. Bairstow could do with slightly better than just avoiding a pair, too. Vihari, after those two wickets, is whipped from the attack. Mohammed Shami is on as India finally take the second new ball. Jimmy Anderson still has his feet up.

So Alastair Cook finishes with 33 Test centuries, 12,472 runs at an average of 45.35.

He batted for 37,308 mins or 621 hours 48 minutes.

He hit 1,442 fours, plus three all-run fours, 11 sixes and four fives (including the one that took him to his hundred today).

He faced 20,038 dot balls, scored 3803 singles, 980 twos and 281 threes.

I'm very sad. What are we going to do without him?

To add to that, and for students of this kind of thing, Alastair Cook ends his Test career with an average of 45.35. Well batted, sir. Don't miss the chance to see him play for Essex over the next few years. Jonny Bairstow, by the way, is off a pair.

That's it. 12,472 runs, and out. Cook stopped just at the boundary edge to turn and soak up the applause for one last time.

It was a lovely, lovely moment. The India team got it spot on, all making sure they shook Root's hand. The applauded Cook off, as did everyone else inside the ground. Cook had his helmet off, showing his bat to all corners. His wife and daughters joined in.

In all of that, Ben Stokes negotiated Vihari's hat-trick ball.

Alastair Cook is not an exaggerator of things but he gives The Oval crowd the full flourish of the bat. That's a very heartfelt departure from him.

    The end of an era.

The ball after Joe Root falls, Alastair Cook edges a cut behind off Hanuma Vihari.

All of the India team rush to shake his hand. Jonny Bairstow gives Cook a pat on the back, then he leaves.

The Oval rises, Cook waves his bat, then disappears up the stairs.

    Chef leaves the kitchen.

Well, why's he done that? Joe Root was trying to get on with it, but slogging to the man on the deep mid-wicket boundary is a pretty miserable way to go. Root can't believe he's done it, but he still has the consolation of a ton to his name. A first Test wicket for Hanuma Vihari too.

There's a great atmosphere at The Oval. People have emptied out of the bars to watch Alastair Cook bat. Which, with the best will in the world, can't have happened that much throughout his career.

To compound India's problems, parts of this pitch are start to look rougher than a slice of toast. Tricks to be played in the fourth innings. A little bit of French cricket from Alastair Cook. Believe it or not, he's now the third highest runscorer of the series.
