India captain Virat Kohli: "A lot of credit has to go to both of those young guys for getting stuck in a difficult stage. It might not show in the scoreline, but both sides know it has been a competitive series

"To be brutally honest we didn't speak about if we could win or not. When those two guys started to hit the ball well, we talked about it. We were just waiting and watching, but things can change very quickly in Test cricket."

England captain Joe Root, speaking at the presentation: "It's been a very tough series and India have played some exceptional cricket but there has been some exceptional stuff from our guys as well. It shows Test cricket is in a good place.

"Rahul and Pant played out of their skin and there were a few nerves. Every result was possible in the final session. Credit to India for playing in that manner and credit to our lads for holding their nerve."

More from Cook at the presentation: "To see Jimmy pass Glenn McGrath's record today was just brilliant.

"I've played so much cricket with him and Broady. That's the hardest bit, knowing you won't play with them again. Or actually it's the easiest bit, knowing I'll never stand at first slip and drop a catch off one of them again

"We've live in each other's pockets for 12 years. It's been a privilege to play Jimmy - England's greatest-ever cricketer.

"His skill to do it time and again. You take it for granted that he will hit his length every single time. That spell when the game was tight - he didn't miss his length once."

Alastair Cook, speaking at the presentation: "I got a text from Beefy last night and he asked for his script writer back.

"I'll remember all the highs with this team and other teams I've played in. But I'll also remember the tough times - today showed just how tough Test cricket is.

"I'm privileged to have worn the cap for as long as I have.

"The reception from the crowd all week was amazing. Somewhere it was written."

Joe Root lifts the Pataudi trophy and is doused in champagne.

Plenty more fizz to be sprayed as England celebrate a 4-1 series win.

I don't see it as 4-1, I see it as 3-2. India didn't win a toss. England have been the better team, but India deserve a lot of credit.

More from Root: "I've had a tricky summer, I've been up at number three. It's filled with me confidence going into an important winter.

"Cook retiring is an opportunity for someone to come in and make that spot their own. We're fortunate to have some good players waiting in the wings to come in."

For some people, James Anderson is not one of the game's greats. His critics argue he can't do it abroad or his average is too high.

Or that he relies too much on overcast conditions, as if wickets claimed when the ball is swinging somehow don't count.

To take 564 Test wickets at an average of 26.84 and a strike rate of 55.8 is an incredible achievement.

Anderson is one of the greats. And he's not done yet.

England player of the series Sam Curran: "It's nice to be involved in a great series. I tried my best and it came off in some situations. The most important thing was to win 4-1 and send Cookie off.

"It's been a great learning curve for me. To learn from these guys and now play with them is pretty cool.

"Consistency is the main thing. Jimmy and Cookie's stats are impressive. I don't want to look too far ahead, I just want to keep contributing."

India captain Virat Kohli is named the tourists' player of the series.

Kohli emphatically answered the question of whether he could bat in English conditions with nearly 600 runs in five Tests.

England wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow, speaking to Sky Sports: "To beat India 4-1 at home in the last six weeks of the summer has been a huge achievement.

"That ball from Rash, people talk about balls of the century, that is up there. It has turned about three or four foot, I reckon.

"It was a fitting way for Cooky to bow out, no amount of words can sum up his career.

On Anderson: "It was the perfect ball. You want to bring the stumps into play. To see them cartwheel - the stumps drop back and the bails to go – was unreal.

"Now he has gone past Glenn McGrath, that’s something that can never be taken away.

"So many records in this game have gone. It just shows the amount of experience and class in the dressing room.

"It’s been an emotional week. I was not expecting it when Cooky told us. It was great for him to have his mates and family in the box and to score the hundred.

"He says he will sleep for a week now it’s all over, but I’m not sure he will get that with Alice about to drop."

It's not only the runs, it's the mentality and culture Cook brings to the dressing room. Maybe the person will be harder to replace than the runs.

More from Cook on TMS: "I can't believe how tired I was today. I think I'll sleep for a week and then have a new baby.

"It's been one of the great weeks."

England captain Joe Root on TMS: "It was hard work. The wicket wasn't as responsive as we thought it might be.

"Pant looks a very dangerous player. They played extremely well today. Although it's not the way I wanted it to go, it's been a fitting end to the series.

"It sums up the week a little bit. Everything fitted into place. It's been a fairytale week for a number of the guys. To get a 4-1 victory against the world number ones is a wonderful achievement. I'm lost for words."
