  1. new ball

New ballpublished at 17:04 British Summer Time 11 September 2018

Right, sticking with the old ball for 10 overs proved a shrew decision by England as Adil Rashid removed KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant to at least take the threat of defeat away.

The hosts are after the win now. And James Anderson wants his record wicket. England take the new ball.

James Levy: Rashid has a knack of picking up lower order wickets in turning pitches. Is he expensive? Yes, but to not take him to Sri Lanka would be bonkers.

KL Rahul walks off earlier for a fine 149.

The sweep is Ishant's go-to shot. He plays it nicely.

  5. Ind 334-7published at 90 overs

Ishant Sharma bends down a sweep a googly to the fence. Did he pick it? That shot has hurt him - he only bowled eight overs in the second innings due to injury and is limping a bit now.

But he does well to play out the rest of the over.

James Anderson has bowled 11 overs in this spell now. If he goes off soon without getting a wicket then he'll have to wait until Sri Lanka to take his record 564th.

Jonny Bairstow might owe him a pint...

Jadeja does get under your skin, but he's a terrific cricketer.

  8. Ind 330-7published at 89 overs

England need three wickets to win

Ravindra Jadeja continues to advance down the pitch but James Anderson is hanging it wide and the India all-rounder just has to leave.

Anderson mixes it up by digging in a short ball at Jadeja, who has to shimmy out of the way.

The last is on the spot and Jadeja has to defend. An intriguing battle between these two. That's another maiden.

  9. Ind 330-7published at 88 overs

    Minimum 20 overs remaining

Ishant Sharma drives uppishly at a googly but it chips into safety.

The India seamer survives and plays out a maiden from Adil Rashid.

England have 20 overs left to take three wickets.

    Rishabh Pant batted brilliantly.

I don't think that was Alastair Cook's catch at first slip. Not sure it would've carried and Jonny Bairstow did get there.

James Anderson bowls yet another maiden but remains wicketless today.

It went in and out. That would have been it. Perhaps Bairstow should have left it.

  13. dropped catch

Jadeja dropped on threepublished at 86.2 overs

James Anderson draws the edge and it flies low to Jonny Bairstow, who can't cling one with one hand, diving to his left.

That would've been the record 564th Test wicket.

Maybe it is written that Alastair Cook has to catch it instead? For now, he gives Bairstow a consoling pat.

Andy du frain: That delivery is an absolute joke. How is anyone supposed to play that? I feel Rashid has to go to Sri Lanka and be given a chance to actually bowl.

  15. Ind 330-7published at 86 overs

    Minimum 22 overs remaining

Ishant Sharma prods at a big-spinning leg-break and it catches the outside edge.

Alastair Cook flings himself, somewhat ungainly, but can't quite get to the looping ball.

Would have been a catch for the ages.

  17. Ind 328-7published at 85 overs

    Target 464

Those two wickets have unsurprisingly resulted in a change of approach for India.

Ravindra Jadeja leaves the first five well alone. He then looks to advance, trying to pick up a single but James Anderson fires it a little wider.

Canny bowling - a maiden and Ishant Sharma is on strike to Adil Rashid next up.

James Anderson continues. There are a minimum of 24 overs remaining in the day.

He's very upset with himself. He knows that he could have carried on. That wasn't the shot that was required. What a terrific innings it has been. If he applies himself like he did, he will get many more centuries for India.
