Alastair Cook on TMS: "I'll share it with Jimmy.

"Everyone was saying to me to get my hands ready, we thought the cricketing gods might give us c Cook b Anderson one last time.

"What a game of cricket, a great way to go.

"I can't describe what Jimmy must go through to do what he does. At tea he said 'I think I'm in for a long spell here'. He's the best cricketer England have ever produced.

"He's an absolute freak. It's been a pleasure to stand at slip for him."

Adil Rashid on Test Match Special: "It was an exciting game. I thought we played exceptionally well. It wasn't going for us in the first two sessions, but things changed quickly.

On the ball to KL Rahul: "It did go miles. I was just trying to spin it hard, into the rough. Luckily that went quite a bit and hit the top of off."

More from James Anderson on TMS: "It will take a while to sink in. Cookie retiring has been a big thing for me – I’m trying not to cry. It’s been a special achievement for me. It’s not something I’ve aimed for. I’ve just enjoyed playing for England – it’s an amazing job.

"When we come into series like this, there’s always a question mark over bowlers aged 35. That’s my main focus. I feel fresh considering how many overs I’ve bowled. I’m enjoying playing. As long as that continues, I’ll carry on playing as long as I can.

On Alastair Cook retiring: "It's been difficult. He’s a very good mate of mine and he’s helped me through a lot of my career. He’s been there as a friend for me. I’ll miss him. I can still go and visit him. We’ll still be good mates. To be honest, he’s been a bit of a role model. The way he goes about his business, I’ve tried to emulate that."

The Oval has been about Cook. It's been an emotional week. We've celebrated a great player and his mate James Anderson took the last wicket to beat McGrath's record. Whoever wrote the script got it spot on.

James Anderson on TMS: "It wasn't through lack of trying, believe me. I'm grateful to Joe Root for giving me the new ball 10 overs into my spell.

"It's been an amazing series, one of the best I've been a part of. It's been quite close. We've been up against it a lot and we've had to put hard yards in. It's been hard graft. It's been a real big stepping stone for this team. We've been inconsistent, but it feels like we're getting somewhere."

Remember that lad with the frosted tips who made his Test debut against Zimbabwe in 2003.

He's now taken more Test wickets than any other pace bowler in history.

"I'm just happy to win the game. I wasn't even thinking about the record. When India were building that partnership it was looking like they were going to get close.

"Cook is my best mate and it's been brilliant just to have him there for me all the time."
