  1. Ind 320-5published at 79.2 overs

Rishabh Pant aims a reverse sweep and then a massive mow to start the over, connecting with neither.

KL Rahul might want to settle him down for these next four balls.

Right, here is Adil Rashid for what should be the final over with this ball.

Joe Root might ask that the ball is burned after it's removed from the field.

Rishabh Pant does not rate Adil Rashid...

  4. Ind 320-5published at 79 overs

    Target 464

Jonny Bairstow is now standing up to James Anderson.

    The world has gone mad.

It does at least keep KL Rahul back in his crease and prevent any more runs from the over.

Whatever we think about the tactics or otherwise, we're being entertained into the final session of the final Test of the summer.

    Andrew Samson
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

India need 166 in the final session to win the Test. Five teams have made more than that in a final session to win a game.

  9. Ind 316-5published at 78 overs

England need five wickets to win

Adil Rashid is bowling very wide and trying to get extreme turn.

KL Rahul tickles one off the pads for two leg-byes. Not sure he was playing a shot there.

He does get one to really bite and Jonny Bairstow can't hold on - two byes.

The last ball is pitched up there and wide and Rishabh Pant of course whacks it away through the covers for four. Nine off the over for India.

Your best bowler should bowl when the batsman are most vulnerable. At the start of the innings, or after a break.

  12. Ind 307-5published at 77 overs

    Need 157 runs to win

James Anderson gets away with a low full toss that is half-stopped in the covers and Rishabh Pant just gets one.

KL Rahul then flashes at a wide one and Jos Buttler does brilliantly to pull off a diving stop at backward point.

Rahul taps another single to the total.

    James Anderson is on.

It feels a very long time since he drew level with Glenn McGrath's 563 Test wickets.

By the time Anderson and Broad bowled, the ball was 70 overs old and the batsmen had been together for an hour and a half. It was extraordinary.

  15. Ind 305-5published at 76 overs

    Target 464

Rashid responds by finding the inside edge but it deflects away safely enough for Pant to pick up one more.

  16. 6 runs

    Ind 304-5published at 75.5 overs

Rishabh Pant is blasting Adil Rashid out of England's touring party to Sri Lanka.

Nothing is impossible, but it's highly unlikely. Also, if India go for it, there's a better chance of England winning.

So India need 166 runs to win in 32 overs at a run rate of 5.19.

    England need five wickets.

The huge thing for the hosts is that the new ball is available in five overs.

The odds are still with England wrapping up victory, but this one could get very close.

    Here we go...

As brilliant a session as it was for India, it was a very curious one for England and especially Joe Root's captaincy.

The hosts didn't so much let the game drift but veer wildly off a mountain road and into a ravine.

It seems Root doesn't trust Adil Rashid much and the leg-spinner offered no control, resulting in Root himself bowling plenty of overs as England were just holding out for the new ball.

But then India were scoring a bit too quickly so Stuart Broad and James Anderson were called for with the old ball.

As he blasted his way towards a maiden Test ton, it seemed inevitable Pant would get there with a six.

And so it came to pass...
