Thomas Measures: Genius this by Root. Let India back in the game, and then unlease Anderson with the new ball. Thus creating a more intense atmosphere, for when he goes past Glenn McGrath's wicket tally.

I stand by my theory that there are too many runs required for India to win this match - the rate is just a smidge too high. The draw is looking decent, though. The Oval gas holder peers over the stand, looking like a giant Meccano structure. An honest maiden from James Anderson.

I'm not sure what a self-respecting fast bowler would make of the keeper standing up to him.

    Though Root must've consulted Broad.

    Rahul 140, Pant 87

Interesting. Bairstow is standing up to Broad. The left-hander has been batting out of his crease and the pitch is having a snooze. Pant angles to the vacant third man region to pick up another boundary. This is turning into a chastening pre-Sri Lanka experience for England. It's just over 20 minutes until tea.

If you're going to play shots to get up to that seemingly impossible target then you're going to have to take a risk. And taking a risk will create chances.

    Target 464

Anderson strains and kicks in, flashes of pink on the bottom of his spikes. Four leg byes off Rahul's thigh pad takes the partnership past 150. In terms of winning this game, India would have to score at five an over, which is a bit of a stretch. Anderson goes past the outside edge with a beauty, as if accentuate the point.

Anderson did not get much movement in the morning but he's class act - he doesn't need a new ball and can get it reverse swinging at any time.

Huge applause. James Anderson. A Test to win and a record to break...

Broad, lunch or no lunch, makes things happen. Uppish from Rahul, short of the men in the covers, then a slip from Pant just evades the fingertips of the fielder at midwicket. Broad, is holding his ribs and pulling a pained face.

Milton Rumata: I'm hearing rumours that apparently Root forgot his lunch today, and even though Anderson, Broad, and Curran accidentally brought too much lunch, they didn't share it with Root. Hence their exclusion.

Hello there! Stuart Broad is here! The Oval crowd signals its relief with a hearty round of applause.

This partnership is now 144 - the highest for the sixth wicket that India have ever had in the fourth innings of a Test match.

    Target 464

Don't get me wrong, I still think England will win this match. It's just that the last hour or so has been... curious. Ben Stokes is bowling bumpers at Rishabh Pant, who rolls the wrist on a lovely hook shot. Joe Root looks like a man out of options, which is strange because he has loads of options. Runs required down below 200.

Howard Freeman: Thoroughly enjoying my first cricket match at The Oval. India putting on a good show and keeping the contest alive. Only disappointment of the day so far is ordering a ‘pork pot’ and getting a ‘crackling pot’ from the hog roast van (thieving porksters!)

  18. Ind 250-5published at 14:56 British Summer Time 11 September 2018

Still Stokes. Nothing happening. Zip. Nada. The new ball is due in 15 overs, so probably not before tea. Alastair Cook has just nipped off the field. Presumably to get his bowling boots on. Either that or his wife has gone into labour.

There will be no panic in the England camp yet but there will be increasing hope and expectation in the India one.

Presumably that chat was Anderson and Broad introducing themselves to Root. Root is in to his fifth over. That's as many as Adil Rashid has bowled in this innings. Rahul shimmies to lace through the covers for four. I'm genuinely baffled by what is going on out there.
