England pace bowler Katherine Brunt told BBC Sport: "It's really gutting to lose like that because we're a much better team than we showed. We played a few soft shots and we were on the back foot from the beginning. Congratulations to them, they played really well.

"I always love to bowl first, I like to steam out and get my thing done. I didn't think there was much in it and the wicket played the way it did the whole day."

On the "catch" where Lizelle Lee was reprieved: "I honestly thought I caught it. The umpires made their decision. Hopefully if we get one like that like that they will make a good decision for us.

"You can always come back stronger and that's what we're going to do. We need to get rid of some nerves. We'll keep on the front foot and come out fighting next game."

But the day belonged to Lizelle Lee, who saw her side home with an unbeaten 92 from 128 balls, wining the game in the grand manner with a six:

Brunt then struck early with the ball, removing Laura Wolvaardt, before Sarah Taylor pulled off a superb stumping to dismiss Sune Luus.

But Brunt batted very sensibly, bringing up her second ODI half-century - and eventually recording her highest international score with an unbeaten 72 as England made 189-9, having been 64-6.

SA opener Lizelle Lee on her reprieve after being "caught": "They were screaming at me saying they should have a look at the catch. I felt a bit different going out there, but Mignon kept me happy."

South Africa captain Dane van Niekerk: "The bowlers worked superbly, I couldn't ask for better. We were a bit down after we felt we could have bowled them out for 120. But I had to play my natural game, I'm hitting the ball well and we had a lot of laughs. Lizelle Lee was brilliant, she's aggressive by nature but the way she went about it was great. There are two more big games for us and the most important thing for us is to win the series."

England captain Heather Knight: "I think it was a 50-50 call [at the toss], I don't think the ball moved outrageously, but we were a few runs short today. Katherine played superbly under pressure, she's a genuine all-rounder now and it was an outstanding performance from her. South Africa bowled very well and after those early wickets it was difficult to get back into the game. But I can't fault the way the girls fought."

For me, Laura Wolfvaardt should bat at three or four. I wouldn't mind to see Van Niekerk opening the batting with Lizelle Lee, as they do win T20s.

In the past, South Africa haven't always had confidence. They used t be happy to be in the top four teams. Now they know they can go out there and beat the best teams in the world.
