England will be frustrated with that performance. They've got to regroup quickly before the next game at Hove on Tuesday. I'm sure they'll have a team debrief tomorrow.

South Africa have performed well - Ismail and Kapp got wickets with the new ball to put England on the back foot, and I think they've still got areas they can improve on, despite a convincing victory. Dane van Niekerk really stood out for me.

    SA 193-3published at 45.3 overs

South Africa win by seven wickets, lead series 1-0

Lee wins it with a six! She launches Marsh over mid-wicket.

It's South Africa's first ODI win over England in England for 15 years.

  3. SA 187-3published at 45 overs

    Target 190

Make that three, as Lee moves to 86 with a single.

  4. SA 186-3published at 44.4 overs

    Lee 81, Du Preez 36

Jenny Gunn to bowl what could be the last over. The SA pair exchange singles before Lee goes over the top with a first-bounce four to the extra cover fence. Four needed.

  5. SA 180-3published at 44 overs

    Target 190

This game is approaching its last rites - with Lee and Du Preez (that sounds like an Owen Wilson film), external seeing their side towards the finish line.

Three singles mean it's 10 needed from 36 balls. South Africa can do it in two shots.

If it wasn't for Katherine Brunt with the bat, we'd have long been at the pub by now.

I've been impressed with England in the field, they've given 100% and never given up, when it's very easy to.

  8. SA 177-3published at 43 overs

    Brunt 10-2-31-1

Katherine Brunt in for her last over, giving it everything as ever, but Mignon du Preez flogs her for four to reduce the deficit to under 20. It also probably means there won't be enough runs available for Lee to get a century. Having taken a while to get off the mark, Du Preez looks like she's in a hurry, pulling Brunt for four more, while an Ecclestone slide keeps the right-hander to two off Brunt's last delivery. 10 off that over gives a rather false look to Brunt's bowling figures. 13 to win.

England always used to do well against South Africa but this result - if it happens how we think - shows how many teams around the world are improving.

  10. SA 167-3published at 42 overs

    23 needed from 48 balls

Lizelle Lee misses with an ugly heave across the line, it hits her on the right hip and Laura Marsh yells an lbw appeal... to no avail.

Aussies in general are never slow to mock the Poms - but recently retired Australia international Alex Blackwell, who will be coaching Lancashire Thunder in the Super League this season, has noticed a few shocks of late...

    Target 190

England can at least put the field back now the powerplay is over, after South Africa took full advantage. And with arguably their last throw of the dice, England turn back to Katherine Brunt, who has two overs left. Having taken 1-18 from eight, to add to her unbeaten 72, she's had a terrific game.

Du Preez hits the ball in the air - but typical of England's fortunes today, it lands safely over point as two or three fielders converge.

  13. Missed stumpingpublished at 40 overs

    SA 163-3

A rare lapse behind the stumps by Sarah Taylor - a stumping chance is fumbled with Du Preez out of her ground. Marsh is made to pay as Du Preez helps herself to four with a slog-sweep. A couple of singles are drilled down to long-on and England look like they're out of ideas. 27 needed from 60 balls.

If you didn't see it earlier, this was the superb stumping that Taylor did make earlier.

  14. SA 156-3published at 39 overs

    Lee 76, Du Preez 15

Sedate progress at New Road - Lizelle Lee has time to wait for the loose delivery to swivel-pull it for four through the big gap backward of square leg.

  15. SA 151-3published at 38 overs

    Target 190

Laura Marsh into the attack post-drinks, but South Africa will soon be able to send their drink orders to whichever Worcester hostelry they may choose to frequent tonight. Just two singles from the over, but they only need 39 from 72 balls. Barely three an over.

CricketHer:, external "A batsman may be recalled at any time up to the instant when the ball comes into play for the next delivery." Law 31.7. (The catch was good tho - I'll go to my grave on that - TV replay was misleading - she held it.) England are angry, and not in a good way - if they were a teenager they'd be storming up to their room and slamming the door.

There are so many times in sport you can pull something out of the bag. England did it in the World Cup final, but South Africa have been ahead of the game nearly all day.

    SA 149-3

Can the experienced Jenny Gunn conjure something special for England? Lee moves to 71 with a single. Du Preez lofts a four over mid-on, and the requirement for an away win is now 41 from 78 balls.

  20. Powerplaypublished at 36 overs

    SA 144-3

The batting powerplay is signalled, and Shrubsole is also going to complete her spell. Du Preez drives her for four, there's a beaming smile on her face and it seems as though the stars have aligned for South Africa.

Shrubsole finishes with figures of 10-0-36-2. The Proteas need 46 from 84 balls.
