If they get through the next five overs, South Africa should do this. Brunt and Shrubsole are going to come hard at them.

  2. SA 108-2published at 25 overs

    Target 190

South Africa are plodding remorselessly towards their target, Katherine Brunt is giving it everything but it's not going for her - she implores umpire Tim Robinson to give Dane van Niekerk lbw but it looked like there might have been an inside edge on that.

What was your favourite one-day shirt when playing for England? And did it have anything to do with the success you had wearing it?

I've got two. I did like the red [circa 2013-14], but I didn't like the red trousers. But for the first, I've got to pick the 2011 kit, predominantly navy blue with red sleeves. The second was the aqua-blue 2014 kit, I scored a hundred in that at Scarborough.

  4. 50 runs

50 for Dane van Niekerkpublished at 24 overs

    SA 106-2

Two milestones for South Africa in quick succession - back-to-back fours through the covers push South Africa's score past 100, and Dane van Niekerk's own score past 50 for the sixth time in ODIs.

  5. SA 96-2published at 23 overs

    Target 190

Knight turns back to the pace of opening bowler Katherine Brunt, and even has Taylor standing up to the stumps. Van Niekerk nudges a single to fine leg. Lee, within sight of a half-century, is watchful against the Barnsley pacer.

South Africa are just over halfway there - they need 94 more from 27 overs. Under three-and-a-half an over.

Obviously England know they need wickets, but it's about not going searching for them. Sometimes, the opposition just play good shots.

  7. SA 95-2published at 22 overs

    Lee 47, Van Niekerk 41

Lizelle Lee - just after Charlotte Edwards on TMS says Lee's not much of a paddler - paddle-sweeps Marsh for four, then launches her wide of mid-off for four, the ball reaching the boundary rope on the second or third bounce.

England need a wicket, and I wonder if Heather Knight might turn to a part-time bowler who's been a highly effective partnership-breaker before now - herself...

Laura Marsh has a reputation for telling really long stories which don't often end with a punchline. She gets a lot of grief for it, from Heather in particular.

  9. SA 87-2published at 21 overs

    Lee 39, Van Niekerk 41

It's a better over from England - just a single from it. While it's not going to rain, the stats suggest that if it did, South Africa would be 23 ahead of the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern par score.

And if you missed Henry Moeran's lunchtime chat with ECB director of cricket Clare Connor, it's now available as a TMS podcast.

This is now South Africa's highest ODI third-wicket partnership against England.

  11. SA 86-2published at 20 overs

    Target 190

It's spin from both ends now as off-spinner Laura Marsh replaces Sciver at the New Road End. The powerful Lizelle Lee pushes the score along with a single, and Van Niekerk's wrists move in a flash as she threads a four between extra cover and mid-off.

Paul Farbrace once said of the men's ODI team that he would like even the fringe players to have 30 caps. It would be the same for the women. Kate Cross has played 14 games, Beth Langston four. They need to get those numbers up before Brunt and Shrubsole hand over the reins.

While they're finishing their drinks, here's the highlights from this innings so far - a Brunt wicket, a world-class stumping and a Van Niekerk six.

Just as with James Anderson and Stuart Broad in the men's team, is it a concern about the depth of England's fast bowling ranks below Katherine Brunt and Anya Shrubsole?

It's the experience as well - the men's bowlers like Chris Woakes and Mark Wood have a bit of experience, while Tash Farrant and Katie George haven't much. Shrubsole is only 26 but Brunt is 32 now, so it's important that the others get some opportunities.

  15. drinks break

    Drinks breakpublished at 19 overs

    SA 80-2

Sophie Ecclestone gives it a bit of flight, but isn't getting much change out of South Africa's third-wicket pair - even a bottom edge from Dane van Niekerk narrowly misses the stumps, to Ecclestone's dismay. (Ecclestone is a loyal Everton fan, so she's had plenty of dismay in the last year or so). Time for drinks.

England need wickets. I'm making that call.

  17. SA 77-2published at 18 overs

    Lee 35, Van Niekerk 36

Van Niekerk dabs Sciver for a single to Amy Jones - who's nominally England's reserve wicketkeeper but is in the outfield today, patrolling the square leg boundary. The Proteas skipper is hitting the ball well today, squeezing another four through cover point.

Have you heard that Laura Marsh is good at DIY? She has a skillset, which is surprising, because along with Tammy Beaumont she has the smallest hands in the team. In contrast, I electrocuted myself last year on an extractor fan above the cooker.

  19. SA 71-2published at 17 overs

    Target 190

Ecclestone into her fourth over, just a couple of singles from it. As they're only defending 190, England need a wicket soon if this game is not to slip away from them.

  20. SA 69-2published at 16 overs

    Lee 33, Van Niekerk 30

Having taken a bit of tap at the New Road End, including that six, Jenny Gunn is replaced by fellow right-arm medium-pacer Natalie Sciver. Naturally, Sarah Taylor is standing up to the stumps. Van Niekerk swipes her fifth four backward of point.
