    Jones b Ismail 19 (Eng 20-1)

Just when Amy Jones was starting to move up through the gears with another cover-driven four, Shabnim Ismail has her revenge as Jones tries to flay her through the leg side and is bowled hitting across the line.

The engine room of England's middle order at three, four, five, six has been very consistent, which is good for any team.

  3. Eng 16-0published at 4 overs

Marizanne Kapp is bowling a good line and length early on - which makes it slightly surprising that the sole slip fielder is taken out. Jones, who has been operating exclusively in boundaries so far, is denied on the rope at deep extra cover and has to come back for a well-run three.

The pitch is a bit slower than we thought it might be. Amy Jones has capitalised on anything that has been dropped short, while Marizanne Kapp has caused Tammy Beaumont some early problems.

  5. Eng 13-0published at 3 overs

Tammy Beaumont, so dominant at last year's World Cup when she was player of the tournament, made an ODI century on this ground against Pakistan a couple of years ago, but is watchful at this stage.

She plays out a maiden - which TMS scorer Phil Long reveals is Ismail's 100th maiden over in ODIs.

I'm surprised South Africa have dropped Trisha Chetty, who always looked good when she played us. Is it too much for them to expect Lizelle Lee, such an important player for South Africa, to open the batting and keep wicket? I always used to like left-arm seamer Moseline Daniels - their World Cup team was as balanced as anyone's, so I was shocked to see Chetty and Daniels left out.

Jones is a tall figure - though standing next to Tammy Beaumont she looks ultra-tall!

  8. Eng 13-0published at 2 overs

    Jones 12, Beaumont 1

Fortune favours Tammy Beaumont as the speedy Marizanne Kapp gets a couple to angle in towards the right-hander, and Beaumont gets her bat down on one which scoots past the stumps and down to fine leg for one.

Jones continues to look fluent off the back foot, square-driving Kapp for her third four of the innings, while the Proteas pace star can't interest umpire Tim Robinson with a half-hearted lbw appeal.

This is good from Jones, she's leaving balls but punished the bad balls of the over. The last one was a poor delivery, halfway down the pitch.

  10. Eng 8-0published at 1 over

Ismail is one of the quicker bowlers in women's international cricket and has a slip and a gully in, but Jones gets England up and running with a powerful cut-drive through the covers for four, from the third ball of the innings. The last ball is a disappointing half-tracker which Jones - less elegantly but with the same result - clubs wide of mid-on for four more.

Yes, it's Amy Jones taking strike for England, accompanied by Tammy Beaumont. England are giving a debut to their new ODI kit - which is a slightly paler blue than that in which they won the World Cup, and there are a couple of lime green flashes on the shoulders and under the arms.

Shabnim Ismail has ball in hand. Let's play.

This series is going to be a really exciting one. I'm interested to see how it will pan out. It's good to see Amy Jones at the top of the order, she batted at three in India and started off with two ducks before scoring 94, btu she suits opening the batting.

England have got so many batting options - Danielle Wyatt and Lauren Winfield are in the mix in terms of opening, but they've gone with Amy Jones who is good against pace, and South Africa have possibly the best opening attack in the world in Shabnim Ismail and Marizanne Kapp.

South Africa have chosen to drop Trisha Chetty, who's played over 100 one-day internationals and is one of the most successful wicketkeepers in women's inernational cricket. Sune Luus has only batted once at number three in ODIs, but they've got a very experienced bowling line-up.

It's a brave move to bat first, but a positive move. The conditions could work in favour of the bowlers early on, but England are backing themselves to get a big score. I think they enjoy playing at home, they'll be relishing this opportunity.

As Heather Knight points out in her latest BBC Sport column this week, there are ICC Women's Championship points at stake in this summer's ODIs (three against South Africa, three against New Zealand).

As the early table, external suggests, England's losses to Australia in the Women's Ashes mean they're lagging behind the other leading sides at this stage - albeit with games in hand. The top four teams in the Championship, played from 2017-2020, qualify automatically for the 2021 World Cup in New Zealand.
