  1. wicket

WICKET Banton lbw Wood 3published at 10:56 British Summer Time 24 September 2018

    Somerset 8-1 v Nottinghamshire

A perfect inswinger from Luke Wood is too good for 19-year-old Somerset opener Tom Banton, who departs in the sixth over of play, leg-before as he tries to work the ball towards mid-wicket. Marcus Trescothick is three not out from 23 balls as he is joined by Azhar Ali.

  2. Lancs pair keep Hants in checkpublished at 10:55 British Summer Time 24 September 2018

    Hampshire 6-0 v Lancashire

Tom Bailey and Richard Gleeson have been right on the money for Lancashire - with two maidens each from the three overs they have bowled so far.

As we ave already told you, Lancashire must win this game with maximum points and then hope that one of Notts or Yorkshire has an absolute shocker.

  3. wicket

WICKET Stoneman c Wheater b Porter 2published at 10:49 British Summer Time 24 September 2018

    Surrey 13-1 v Essex

Wicket number 53 of the season for Jamie Porter as the Essex pace bowler finds the edge of Mark Stoneman's bat as he pushes forward defensively and keeper Adam Wheater does the necessary. Jason Roy is the new Surrey batsman.

Porter's choice of headgear for the pre-match warm-up will give you an idea of the temperature at The Oval.

  4. Dour start at New Roadpublished at 10:49 British Summer Time 24 September 2018

    Worcestershire 2-0 v Yorkshire

Just two runs scored in the first five overs at Worcester.

One off the bat, one leg bye. Three straight maidens for Ben Coad.

Yorkshire only need two bowling points to secure their Division One safety. But it looks like already relegated Worcestershire, coached by a Yorkshireman in Kevin Sharp, are going to try and make them work for it.

  6. Notts look for early wicketspublished at 10:45 British Summer Time 24 September 2018

    Somerset 4-0 v Nottinghamshire

So Notts need five points to secure their Division One status - but having lost the toss, they are out in the field and looking to pick up the first three with the ball. The two Lukes - Fletcher and Wood - have been on the spot so far, with no sign of a boundary for either Marcus Trescothick or partner Tom Banton, who is 23 years his junior.

  7. wicket

WICKET Crawley c Ambrose b Wright 4published at 10:39 British Summer Time 24 September 2018

    Kent 4-1 v Warwickshire

First blood to Warwickshire in the battle of the top two at Edgbaston as Zak Crawley is caught behind off Chris Wright to the 10th ball of the day.

This is Wright's last game before he leaves to join Leicestershire over the winter. A sound start to it.

And there could have been more too, as, at the other end, in-form left-armer Keith Barker has also caused problems.

  9. Surrey make steady startpublished at 10:38 British Summer Time 24 September 2018

    Surrey 4-0 v Essex

Jamie Porter produced a destructive new-ball spell for Essex last week against Worcestershire, but champions Surrey safely negotiate his opening over at The Oval. Skipper Rory Burns - picked by England for their forthcoming Test series in Sri Lanka - gets off the mark with three runs and Mark Stoneman takes one from the next delivery.

  10. Minute's silence for Roy Booth at Worcesterpublished at 10:31 British Summer Time 24 September 2018

There was a minute's silence before the start of play at New Road following the announcement of the death, at 91, of former Worcestershire and Yorkshire wicketkeeper Roy Booth.

Booth began his career with his native Yorkshire in 1951 before starting a long line of Yorkshiremen who came south to play for Worcestershire in 1955.

    Roy BoothImage source, Rex

He was Worcestershire's wicketkeeper when they won the County Championship for the first time in 1964, before following it up with a repeat triumph in 1965.

He was the last wicket-keeper to take over 100 victims in an English first-class season, scoring 10,134 runs in his 468 first-class matches.

He went on to serve on the committee, became club president and his late wife Joyce also ran the famous teas in the Ladies Pavilion for more than 20 years.

OK then, everyone is out in the middle. In the 'immortal' words of Michael Buffer, "let's get ready to rumble".

  12. Moving onpublished at 10:29 British Summer Time 24 September 2018

County Championship - play starts 10:30 BST

As well as players ending their first-class careers this week (see 10:25 entry), there are others bidding farewell to team-mates, friends and fans before moving on to new clubs for 2019.

Worcestershire batsman Joe Clarke will be plying his trade for Notts for the next four seasons, and will be hoping to sign off with a big score against Yorkshire at New Road, while White Rose paceman Jack Brooks - who will be a Somerset player next summer - will be doing his best to stop him.

Craig Miles is in action for Gloucestershire against Derbyshire, while fellow seamer Chris Wright makes his final appearance for Warwickshire before heading across the Midlands to Leicestershire.

    Winter movers

    • Jack Brooks - Yorkshire to Somerset
    • Zak Chappell - Leicestershire to Notts
    • Jordan Clark - Lancashire to Surrey
    • Joe Clarke - Worcestershire to Notts
    • Craig Miles - Gloucestershire to Warwickshire
    • Matt Milnes - Notts to Kent
    • Liam Norwell - Gloucestershire to Warwickshire
    • Liam Plunkett - Yorkshire to Surrey
    • Ben Raine - Leicestershire to Durham
    • Chris Wright - Warwickshire to Leicestershire
  13. Third time lucky for Kent?published at 10:27 British Summer Time 24 September 2018

Warwickshire v Kent - play starts 10:30 BST

After losing in the One-Day Cup final to Hampshire at Lord's, then being beaten on home soil in the T20 Blast quarter-finals by Lancashire, Kent have twice been closer to winning something in 2018.

"We've had two other chances to win silverware this season and missed out," said head coach Matt Walker. "We now have a third opportunity which is a very nice situation to be in.

"We go to Birmingham knowing that whoever wins takes the spoils, which is exciting. In some ways the pressure if off us now, so I just want the guys to go there, express themselves and do themselves justice."

It will simply add to the sense of theatre at Edgbaston that Kent have Allan Donald as part of their backroom team - as assistant coach.

The 51-year-old Warwickshire and South Africa fast bowling legend was appointed alongside Walker in January 2017, but was unable to take up his job until this year because of work permit issues. And this will be his first return to Edgbaston since then.

In 2009 and again in 2010-11, Warwickshire's Jonathan Trott and Paul Collingwood of Durham shared in Ashes glory against Australia as members of the England Test side.

This week they are playing at different grounds, but sharing the emotions that come with playing their final games of first-class cricket before retirement.

After James Foster's farewell to Essex last week (see below), Trott and Collingwood head a list of players bowing out of the county game this week.

The others are Hampshire batsman Jimmy Adams, Northants all-rounder Steven Crook, Worcestershire and former Sussex pace bowler Steve Magoffin and Yorkshire wicketkeeper Andy Hodd - but of those, only Adams, will be in action out in the middle.

Thanks for the entertainment, chaps. We wish you all the best in the future,

After five months on the road, it's almost time for BBC 5 live sports extra and BBC local radio commentators to put away their laptops and microphones and head, like tortoises, for winter hibernation.

Before that, though, we have one final round of County Championship matches and, as usual, our BBC teams will be providing ball-by-ball coverage from all of them.

Select a match from the links at the top of the page and we'll keep you up to date with what's happening in the other games via this text commentary.

  16. Now for the cherry on top - Patelpublished at 10:20 British Summer Time 24 September 2018

Warwickshire v Kent - match starts 10:30 BST

Warwickshire skipper Jeetan Patel says promotion back to Division One at the first attempt with the Division Two title this week would be 'the cherry on the top'.

"We've now forced a final," he told BBC WM ahead of the second v first shoot-out with Kent at Edgbaston. "A one-off game, which is all about expressing ourselves and making sure we do our jobs well.

Warwickshire captain Jeetan Patel was once again the Bears' top Championship wicket taker this season with 55

"We've got to take a lot from what we've done. The ultimate aim was always promotion and we've worked so hard to get to this position. Everybody's been on the same page.

"It's not easy this division. A lot of results - and we forced the ones that we needed our way. Now we have one big push to go and the cherry on the top would be silverware."

  17. Little hope for Lancashirepublished at 10:19 British Summer Time 24 September 2018

Hampshire v Lancashire - play starts 10:30 BST

    Division One tableImage source, .

It's hard to believe that a team with the two most prolific wicket-taking seam bowlers in Division One can be facing relegation - but it will take something of a miracle for Lancashire to avoid the drop.

Graham Onions and Tom Bailey have claimed 113 victims between them this summer, but despite that, the Red Rose county have only won two of their 13 games.

Mathematically, Lancashire could still survive - but realistically, they will be playing Division Two cricket for the first time since 2013 next season.

    • A maximum points victory over Hampshire would give Lancashire 136 points.
    • Nottinghamshire only need six points against Somerset, and Yorkshire require three points against Worcestershire, to reach 137
    • But if Notts and/or Yorkshire finish on 136, and Lancashire take maximum points from their game, they would still go down by virtue of having won fewer matches.
  18. Can new champs match old champs?published at 10:17 British Summer Time 24 September 2018

Surrey v Essex - match starts 10:30 BST

Surrey captain Rory BurnsImage source, Getty Images

The title is in the bag - and there is just one challenge left for champions Surrey, to match Essex's achievement last summer and go through the entire campaign unbeaten.

It is therefore an appropriate quirk of fate that Essex provide the opposition for the final game of the season at The Oval.

Surrey have already surpassed Essex's 2017 points total - and Rory Burns' side would love to better their record of 10 wins and four draws from last season, which they can do by winning the game.

Victory would give them 11 wins and three draws for the season - but whatever the result, there is no doubt that Surrey have been head and shoulders above the rest this summer.

  19. Who'll be Div Two's top dogs?published at 10:14 British Summer Time 24 September 2018

Warwickshire v Kent - match starts 10:30 BST

As we've already mentioned, Kent and Warwickshire will both be playing top-flight cricket next summer after making sure of promotion with a match to spare.

Both, though, would love to finish the season as Division Two champions and they are locked together at the top of the table on 219 points.

Warwickshire coach Jim Troughton told BBC WM he expects a "really intriguing game", but leaders Kent, though, have a slight advantage as they have won two more games and will finish first if the match against the Bears is drawn with both sides taking equal points.

A great scrap in store then.
