Plunkett lbw Akila 5 (Eng 132-9)

HAHA! This is one of the best things I have seen on a cricket field. Plunkett did indeed review an lbw. He was out - plumb.

But while we were waiting for the decision to be reviewed the skies opened and it started chucking it down. The covers came on and the players ran off but Aleem Dar had to wait in the monsoon to give the dismissal.

In the end the umpire was running off the field with his finger up giving the 'out signal' while getting absolutely soaked.

Errr. I'd love to tell you what has just happened but I've no idea. It looks like Liam Plunkett was out lbw but we've lost pictures. He may well have reviewed.

But it seems the covers are on anyway.

  3. Eng 132-8published at 26 overs

It wouldn't be this series if we manages to get a full game in. The groundstaff are looking very busy around the covers. Dushmantha Chameera looks a decent bowler. Quick too. He's up at 88mph.

He concedes just one from this latest over. I think the storm is coming. We're having serious problems with the TV pictures.

  4. Where's the rain?published at 16:21 British Summer Time 23 October 2018

    Simon Mann
BBC Radio 5 live in Colombo

It's not raining at the moment but there was some lightning in the distance. It's dark so it is impossible to tell what's happening, but rain is on the way. When is the question but the umpires will be hoping to finish the match.

  5. Postpublished at 16:20 British Summer Time 23 October 2018

No. They're sticking at it for now.

  6. Postpublished at 16:20 British Summer Time 23 October 2018

There's another rumble of thunder. No lightning yet. Aleem Dar doesn't seem to like it though. The players might be taken off here.

  7. Eng 132-8published at 25 overs

There was, what sounded like, a rumble of thunder just before that wicket. Umpire Aleem Dar flinched like the pet dog that's scared on bonfire night. The groundstaff have just appeared by the boundary edge. This game could be over soon.

Here's Tom Curran who averages 70 in ODIs. Easy. What's all the worry about.

    Rashid b Akila 4 (Eng 129-8)

Adil Rashid is beaten all ends up. I think it was the googly that didn't turn from Sri Lanka's mystery spinner Akila Dananjaya. Rashid tentatively gropes forward but misses and the ball clatters into his stumps.

  10. Eng 128-7published at 24 overs

    Rashid 4, Plunkett 2

The Sri Lankan bands keeps playing in the stands but now they finally have a performance on the field to cheer. The required run rate is over nine now. Plunkett and Rashid don't look confident enough to attack Dhananjaya de Silva.

Alex Hales was next to go - for a duck and without a run being added to the score - as England fell to 4-2.

Stand-in skipper Jos Buttler followed shortly afterwards - also departing without troubling the scorers - as Sri Lanka's seamers got the ball moving.

Dushmantha Chameera then saw off Joe Root for 10 - his third wicket in a superb spell - as England slumped to 28-4.

I'm sorry but I don't get that argument. This is a dead rubber. It's nothing like a World Cup final. This isn't a 'one-off match'. It's a dead rubber.

Many of you will disagree with me, I know. Get in touch if you do.

    Plunkett gets off the mark.

RE - Mark S in London: It's important because if we steamroller through the World Cup but lose the final we will be remembered as the team who can't do it when it matters. Although - on their day - they are the best ODI team in the world, they need to work on the killer instinct in 'dead rubbers' like this one.

Liam Plunkett makes his way past the limping Ben Stokes in the outfield. Plunkett is the new batsman in England's lengthened tail.

Stokes was going for glory. He's on one leg anyway. The end could come quickly now.

    Stokes c Thisara b Akila 67 (Eng 122-7)

And that is that. Ben Stokes' is put out of his misery. He can now go and have a long massage on that pesky calf muscle. The all-rounder goes for one big shot too many and skies Akila Dananjaya to Thisara Perera at long on.

    Well this was unexpected.

  18. Eng 122-6published at 22 overs

    Target 367

Adil Rashid is the new man - hopefully we get to see some wristy flays.

Ben Stokes is on strike for now and just about limps through for a single to beat the throw.

Rashid defends his first two balls.

Here is Matt Henry to guide you through to the end of this one...

    WICKETpublished at 21.1 overs

    S Curran c Sandakan b Dhananjaya 2 (Eng 121-6)

Sam Curran chips it straight to long-off from the returning Dhananjaya de Silva.

Not much else to say, that's a pretty ordinary shot.

England in the mire and Ben Stokes' job is getting tougher and tougher.

  20. Eng 121-5published at 21 overs

    Target 367

Ben Stokes backs away and chips Akila over the covers for what should be two. But he's crocked, so it's just one.

Haha. Sam Curran taps into the off side and sends Stokes back with a late call. That won't help.

That will - Curran jr swipes out to wide long-on for a single to keep the strike.
