If this was a World Cup semi-final I would be able to understand why Stokes was batting but I don't understand it in this situation.

  2. Eng 119-5published at 20 overs

    Stokes 65, S Curran 1

Sam Curran strikes it through the covers for a single to get off the mark.

Ben Stokes taps down the ground for one more.

No reserve day needed now - if rain intervened that would be that as England have batted 20 overs.

They are, unsurprisingly, absolutely miles behind the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern par score.

  3. Eng 116-5published at 19.3 overs

Ben Stokes should bat on one leg more often.

He's playing some ridiculously good shots - this time he bends low to swipe Sandakan majestically through the covers for four.

Next up he unfurls a brilliant reverse sweep for four more.

  4. Eng 108-4published at 19 overs

    Stokes 55, S Curran 0

Excellent over from Akila - just the one run and the wicket of Moeen.

Scurran defends his first two balls.

Stokes could do more harm than good here.

Ben Stokes is having a lot of work from the physio done on his right calf.

    Another banana and more fluids.

Sam Curran has joined him in the middle. He batted superbly in the Test series against India, what's his one-day batting like?

    Moeen c Chandimal b Akila 37 (Eng 107-5)

Akila Danajaya foxes Moeen Ali with a wrong 'un from the back of the hand and the England all-rounder is through his shot too soon.

The ball loops up off the outside edge and Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal dives forward in the covers to take a fine catch.

He's hurt himself diving on one of the pitches but is up and smiling soon enough.

Another key wicket - Moeen was ticking along nicely. Top bowling from Akila.

    Target 367

Stokes just about works the ball past first slip and away for four more.

Sandakan has been far from impressive so far. Will Chandimal stick with him?

50 for Stokespublished at 17.4 overs

Bang! Ben Stokes leans over and clatters it through the covers, this time wide of the man for four.

That's his 50 up, most of it scored on one leg. And that's the 100 up for England.

This is a fine effort from the stricken all-rounder.

Let's hope it is cramp Stokes is struggling with. If it is more then it is a worry for England. It is very warm and humid in Colombo.

  11. Eng 99-4published at 17.3 overs

Ben Stokes smacks an over-pitched delivery from Sandakan out into the deep but picks out the fielder.

He stumbles, grimaces and just about hobbles through for the single. The all-rounder might need to try and deal only in boundaries soon enough.

Moeen is doing that naturally himself - lobbing mid-on inside the circle to hit four down the ground.

    Sri Lanka are fielding fantastically.

  13. Eng 93-4published at 17 overs

    Target 367

Fine over from Akila, allowing just one more single to Ben Stokes.

  14. Eng 92-4published at 16.2 overs

Yeesh. Moeen Ali tries to launch Akila Danajaya over mid-wicket but miscues the ball towards wide long-on.

Sadeera Samarawickrama misjudges the flight slightly and runs round instead of forward initially before putting in a decent diving effort...but the ball bounces just short of him.

Ben Stokes is now shrouded in a big blue towel and is stretching out his left leg.

He's had more enjoyable games of cricket.

Has everyone lost the plot?? England are the best ODI team in the world by a mile. Who really cares if they lose this? Certainly not the team. Sri Lanka have had a decent day while half the England players are already in the bar. Good on them. It's a dead rubber with the operative word being dead. All these bleating so-called fans need a reality check. England have won nine series on the bounce home and away. They've earned a day off.

Lakshan Sandakan continues to drop short in his first over and England plunder 10 from it.

    Time for drinks.

There is of course one piece of solace for England in their current predicament - after a disrupted series that's seen very few batsmen getting a chance, some of the lower-middle order are now getting a good go under pressure.

  19. Eng 89-4published at 15.2 overs

Ben Stokes then gets a reverse sweep so fine that the ball flew just past Niroshan Dickwella's gloves.

The ball runs away for four more. Stokes is really struggling physically out there though.

  20. Eng 85-4published at 15.1 overs

    Spin from both ends now.

Left-arm wrist spinner Lakshan Sandakan is on...

...and he starts with a loose wrong 'un that Ben Stokes clatters through mid-wicket for four.
