Suranga Lakmal goes round the wicket to Keaton Jennings, hoping for a repeat of that Moeen Ali dismissal. In the Sky comms box they are getting excited about England's run-rate of 5.5.

    First ball. Last ball.

  3. Eng 45-2published at 8 overs

    Root 23, Jennings 12

Joe Root is moving into gear now, a fine sweep takes him to 19 from just 20 balls before he dances down the pitch and drives over midwicket for a fine boundary.

Almost one-day stuff that. If it wasn't for the fact that England are two down already this would be a good start...

    Michael Vaughand and Phil Tufnell

Many of you who followed the one-day series between England and Sri Lanka will have already listened to The Cricket Social but it makes its Test debut today!

Michael Vaughan, Phil Tufnell, Simon Mann, Dan Norcross, Isabelle Westbury and Andy Zaltzman will be in the studio with Jonathan Agnew contributing from Galle.

The team will be discussing the play in Sri Lanka, other cricketing issues and probably a lot more if the beach rave discussions of the ODIs are anything to go by.

The show will be on air at 07:00 GMT and you'll be able to listen by clicking play at the top of this page.

  6. Eng 37-2published at 7.3 overs

Change of spinner for Sri Lanka, in comes Akila Dananjaya. He has Joe Root leaning forwards early on, half defensive prod. Decent turn.

Tom Bell: While I am hopeful about Burns, this is certainly the worst top three for England in a while. In fact, it's a challenge to name one that has been worse.

Paul Roberts: An inauspicious start for Cook’s first replacement and the dubious experiment of Moeen - a proven late order performer - at three.

  9. Eng 36-2published at 7 overs

    Root 15, Jennings 11

Smash! A slack ball from Suranga Lakmal, wide and floaty outside off stump and Joe Root leans into it, sending the ball straight to the fence. Do not pass go, do not collect £200.

Root is squared up a touch by the next ball, Sri Lanka's seamer keeping the skip on his toes. But Root then feathers the ball for four through third man.

  12. Eng 28-2published at 6 overs

    Root 7, Jennings 11

Oh hello! Elaborate reverse sweep from Keaton Jennings, he's pulled that one out of the tool box, and it's well hit for four as well.

Plenty of men around the bat as Sri Lanka look to expand on this excellent start. Shot! Square drive to the fence from KJ, good shot.

Jennings averages under 20 with the bat in Tests in 2018...

  13. Eng 20-2published at 5 overs

    Root 7, Jennings 3

Punchy from Joe Root, lovely straight drive right back down the ground for four. England skipper up and running.

  14. Eng 14-2published at 4.3 overs

Suranga Lakmal with figures of 2-4. Lovely stuff. The ball to get rid of Moeen Ali was a real cracker first up. Well thought-out gameplan against the left-hander.

Joe Root, by the way, averages 73 batting at five. Maybe he should go down, not up, the order.

Dan Gaw: At the time Joe Root is coming in, why not just give up and put him back to opener? I'm sure he could manage the extra 16 deliveries...

John Allcoat: I wonder what price Cook is to be playing in the Ashes? Burns looks a prime lbw candidate

Jonathan France: I really don’t think Moeen Ali at 3 is the best way to go for England. Brilliant ball from Lakmal by the way!

  16. Eng 14-2published at 4 overs

England survive the over. Plenty of fans up in the fort, watching for free. Unique surroundings in Galle.

Winning the toss is always important in Galle because of the threat of spin.

But England have lost two wickets inside the first three overs to a seamer.

Rory Burns was unlucky after shaping up well on his debut, but it looked like Moeen Ali missed a straight ball.

  18. Eng 12-2published at 3.3 overs

Perhaps England's top three remains full of holes. Joe Denly may have a great Test here, by being left out altogether.

Keaton Jennings, senior opener these days, streaks a single away. Joe Root would surely have hoped to get to 5am UK time without being out in the middle.

  19. Eng 10-2published at 3 overs

    Well, well, well.

Quite the start! And it was meant to be all about the spinners in Galle.

  20. Eng 10-2published at 2.5 overs

    On a hat-trick...

    Blocked away by Joe Root.
