  1. Eng 107-3published at 40.3 overs

The last few overs before lunch then, Keaton Jennings gets a stride in and gets the wicketkeeper all excited again as he plays with his bat and pad close together. No review after some crease debate, but the replay shows that it did hit pad first...

    Would have been out!

Broad and Bairstow, two more men to try and fit into this team somewhere...

Ben Stokes' position may not be as concrete as it once was. Some second-innings runs wouldn't hurt and he tickles into double figures with a clip to point.

Been lively in the middle this morning and plenty going on in the nets. Jonny Bairstow has been batting again showing no obvious signs of discomfort as he continues to recover from that football induced ankle injury. Meanwhile Stuart Broad has been training hard with England bowling coach Chris Silverwood.

Broad is working on shortening his run up so that he hits the crease harder and keeps his pace up. He’s had input from the New Zealand great Sir Richard Hadlee who has been sharing his experiences with Broad after he cut his run with huge success during his career.

Dhahanjaya de Silva comes on for a bowl, spin, spin sugar. Ben Stokes is stuck between playing forwards or dropping back but forces a single away.

    England's lead is approaching 250.

  5. Eng 100-3published at 38 overs

    Stokes 7, Jennings 56

England bring the 100 up. They lead by 239, in a very strong position.

  6. Eng 93-3published at 37 overs

    Stokes 7, Jennings 52

Ben Stokes has been very watchful since coming to the crease but that's a cracking shot, the bowler drops short and he's on to it in a flash, rocking back to crunch a shot to the fence.

  7. Eng 92-3published at 36 overs

    Stokes 3, Jennings 52

Two years without a fifty is an awfully long time for an opener, for any batsman really.

A Test average of 22 is obviously not good enough but Keaton Jennings has looked good in this Test. England are giving him the chance to secure his place in the team.

  8. Eng 85-3published at 35 overs

    Stokes 2, Jennings 50

England lead by 224, which considering the fact that the highest run chase here is 99, is pretty healthy.

Akila Dananjaya gets the chance to bowl, England's batsmen in a touch of bother, although overall the picture is fairly rosy.

Keaton Jennings sweeps a single away for fifty, his first since December 2016. Massively needed.

Keeper Niroshan Dickwella goes up for a catch, he's all up for that, did it take a nick? No, hit the front pad of Keaton Jennings and Rangana Herath decides against a review.

Next ball Herath pins Jennings on the pad but that's sliding down leg. The Sri Lankan spinners are on fire now. Jenning close to that elusive 50...

    Good morning!

England have taken their lead beyond 200 but it has been Sri Lanka's morning.

Rory Burns, Moeen Ali and Joe Root are all out.

Burns and Moeen's wickets were shockers.

Burns ran himself out for 23 and Moeen carelessly chipped a ball straight to mid-on. Root was less to blame for him dismissal. He edged Herath behind for three.

Keaton Jennings is still there and is closing on a Test fifty. His former Durham team-mate Ben Stokes is at the crease with him.

Joe Root got a good ball. Couldn’t do much about that. Sharp turn and an excellent catch by the keeper.

    Eng lead by 219

Another gem from Dilruwan Perera, he's had no luck with his good balls today. Keaton Jennings is beaten in filght but he can't tickle it behind.

The opener responds then with a drive through cover for four. First boundary of the day after 90-odd-minutes.

  16. Eng 76-3published at 32 overs

Here comes Ben Stokes then, another man whose place in the batting order is up for discussion. Number five too high?

He's welcomed to the crease by an incredibly loud burst of Bon Jovi's 'It's My Life' for absolutely no good reason I can think of. Got to love this Galle DJ.

Crash! Here come the top-order wickets!

This is a really good ball to be honest, Rangana Herath still finding a beauty every now and again! Drifted in, luring the stroke from the England captain, and finding a thin edge to the keeper.

Not sure Root did much wrong.

  18. 'I've no idea what Moeen was doing'published at 05:53 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2018

    Jonathan Agnew

England have lost two wickets today in the most extraordinary of circumstances.

Rory Burns ran himself out in a totally unnecessary way when he had the chance to bat all day.

He was clearly being tied up in knots by Sri Lanka spinner Perera surviving a tight lbw decision and he pushed to mid- on trying to get away from the strike.

Today was supposed to be about patience and discipline with England trying to nail down their position in the match.

Frankly I’ve no idea what Moeen was doing. No idea what was going through his mind and this only makes his tenure at number three look even more short term than it did in the first place.

Back to the drawing board for the number three position then! Why not give Ben Foakes a try..we've tried practically everyone else!
