Mike Kelcey: Why change a winning team? If a player is injured we have the depth of squad to replace him. When he is injured he waits on the bench for his chance.

Paul: Burns, Jennings, Root, Bairstow, Stokes, Foakes, Ali, Curran, Rashid, Leach, Anderson. Sorry Buttler, if you're just in as a batsman then Jonny is better! Root step up to three where your team needs you!

Ben Stokes could do with a good innings. In 2018 he averages just 25 with the bat coming in to this game, with two fifties and a highest score of 66.

His last century came against the Windies in Leeds in the summer of 2017.

No runs for him here off Akila who has been impressive in this spell.

    A boundary!

The slow period after lunch ends when Perera drops way too short and Stokes clubs it away through the off side. The fielder on the boundary dives full length but can't stop it.

Stokes certainly looks a bit happier now as his little grin turns into a wide smile.

Dilruwan Perera, Sri Lanka's best bowler in this match, is back for another bowl.

Akila is making things happen here. First Stokes misses a sweep but gets away with it and then another misses his off stump by the width of one of the hairs in the all-rounder's ginger beard.

And now another turns big! Stokes just grins to his former Durham team-mate Jennings at the end of the over.

Johnno Gordon: how on earth can we be considering dropping Rory Burns after one Test when Keaton Jennings has had endless chances and low scores. Hardly a way to make the best English county opener for the last five years feel welcome.

Well, Marc. You're the first person I've seen saying it should be Anderson to miss out. What do we think?

This is now Keaton Jennings' highest first score since his hundred on Test debut. Good running from Stokes sees him add another at the end of the over.

Drop Anderson for Kandy. Bairstow in. Stokes opens bowling. And bats at three, for me.

Sri Lanka haven't looked too bothered about stopping the singles since lunch. Jennings and Stokes knock a couple more but the hosts look happy to just prevent the boundaries.

Suranga Lakmal, captaining Sri Lanka with Dinesh Chandimal off the field injured, Rangana Herath, Angelo Mathews and bowler Akila Danajaya now all come together for a little meeting and make a slight change.

They bring the point fielder up and that tempts Jennings into twice playing the reverse sweep but he picks out the fielder.

Akila then rips another past Jennings. England won't mind that.

There was much talk about rain hampering this Test before it started but we've not had a drop yet.

Stokes is finding the middle of the bat on pretty much every ball here but has picked out the extra cover fielder on a couple of occasions.

The fans look to be taking it easy around the ground. There's a few chaps in England shirts stretched out on the grassy banks. Lucky them.

I'm with Simon. Stokes is in my team. Let me know what you think. Give me your one to 11.

Four singles in this latest over. England have quadrupled their post-lunch total.

Ben Stokes is the most naturally talented player in the England team. I'm not dropping him, that's ridiculous.

Personally I thought Leach was good yesterday. I wouldn't be dropping Stokes either. That doesn't solve England's problems though. They need to find a way to fit their players in while also firming up their top order. Someone will have to miss out if Bairstow is going to come back in.

Three overs after lunch. One run.

You have to do horses for courses. Get to Kandy, look at the pitch and ask what do we need? It's difficult, but Jonny Bairstow, six months ago, was one of the first three names on the sheet. You can't say, because he's been injured, that he's now out of the team altogether.

Ben Stokes hasn't batted well for the last few months...

Where can you fit Jonny Bairstow into this England team? That's the opening discussion point on The Cricket Social.

The latest theory is to drop a spinner, namely Jack Leach...

Niroshan Dickwella is still perky behind the stumps despite his team's position in the game. I don't think he's ever not mind. He probably talks in his sleep.

The wicketkeeper groans as Akila beats the edge of Stokes' bat twice to end the over.

Off spinner Dhananjaya de Silva, one of Sri Lanka's lesser used bowlers, is on after lunch. Ben Stokes is on strike and finds the middle of the bat with all six deliveries without troubling the scorers. The sun is out again and the clouds look high. No threat of rain yet.
