  1. Eng 73-2published at 31 overs

    Root 3, Jennings 40

The whole England batting order is up for discussion, really. Bar Keaton Jennings and Joe Root at the moment.

Jonny Bairstow is expected to come in for the second Test. Where? Exactly.

Well bowled again, Dilruwan Perera spins one past the edge and then nearly cleans Jennings up with a quicker one.

Kevin Ticehurst: On this evidence Mo is not a number three batsman, but the dilemma for our selectors is where do we put him in the batting order after this Test?!

Lee Jones: Ali! Speaks for itself, exactly why he's not a number three batsmen.

  3. Eng 70-2published at 30 overs

    Eng lead by 210

Mooen Ali's highest averages in Tests come at four and seven. He's not a number three batsman is he to be honest? It's a team of all rounders though.

England have never replaced Jonathan Trott. Joe Root pushes neatly away into the off side.

Arjun Singh: I wonder if that shot signals the end of Moeen at three? I suppose one option is to swap him and Curran, as it’s probable that Curran won’t be bowling anywhere near as many overs.

Tom Potter: Moeen Ali should be at 7 or 8, would rather see Curran at 3 long term

    Barmy Army

Another sell out here in Galle with more than 6,000 watching in the ground and over 1,000 enjoying the free vantage point up on the fort.

I ran into Andy Thompson from Barmy Army travel who said “Every single person I’ve ever seen on an overseas cricket tour is here for this match, this ground has a special draw.”

Andy also told me that the famous Barmy Army trumpeter Billy Cooper will be playing the Last Post on Sunday morning up at the Galle fort clock tower to mark Armistice day with travelling supporters encouraged to attend.

Supporters are also being asked if they’d like the names of any family members killed in the great war to be remembered at the service with wreaths laid at the tower.

  6. Eng 70-2published at 29 overs

    Root 1, Jennings 39

Keaton Jennings has remained consistently solid in his approach this mornign. His footwork and technique is spot on.

A better player of spin than pace?

I just missed an entire over there, not going to lie to you. These spinners don't hang about.

  8. Eng 67-2published at 27 overs

    Root 0, Jennings 37

England skip Joe Root is in then, and instantly wrapped on the pads, it hit him outside the line though.

Jitters at the top of the order once again with two poor dismissals. Nearly every one of the 12 wickets England have lost so far has been self-inflicted to one degree or another.

Moeen Ali will be kicking himself. Straight to a fielder.

    Moeen c Herath b Perera 3 (Eng 67-2)

    Shocker.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. That is a dreadful dismissal for Moeen Ali! A nothing ball from Dilruwan Perera, he looked to hit it over the top but never got hold of it at all and picks out Rangana Herath at mid on.

It almost travelled in slow motion. A gift. Dreadful shot, dreadful choice of shot. Herath nearly dropped it.

Keaton Jennings looked super relaxed during that drinks break. Ah...

Get yourself a brew, it's a drinks break.

  12. Eng 66-1published at 26 overs

Here comes Rangana Herath then, the 40-year-old gets some good turn and bounce straight away to have Mooen Ali in a spot of bother, gloved but gloved safe.

Herath's final Test innings with the ball of course. He'll be looking to add to his 430 scalps...

  13. Eng 64-1published at 25 overs

Keaton Jennings is beaten, and that is a belting ball from Dilruwan Perera. He floats it in and then spins it away, skimming the outside of his off stump.

Nothing wrong with the batsman's approach there. Just a fine ball.

Francis Edwards: This Burns fella looks even worse than Jennings and that’s saying something. I thought he was supposedly the new Cook? Just shows once again the standards of county cricket, if you average 50 you could be a poor player.

Jonathan France: Running yourself out on your test debut must be one of the worst ways to get you. Especially when there’s no pressure & all the time in the world. Two soft dismissals for Burns in this test now!

  16. Eng 63-1published at 24 overs

    Moeen 1, Jennings 35

The next debate then: Is Moeen Ali a long-term number three for England and if not, who is?

He is off the mark now, tucked away, a word of congratulations from the umpire for getting off a pair.

  17. Eng 60-1published at 23.1 overs

Moeen Ali survives his first ball. Large cheers from the England end.

Burns run out (Karunaratne) 23 (Eng 60-1)

Rory Burns had never settled down all morning and he's back in the hutch with England's lead at 199. Shelve the research into century stands.

It's a fine throw, a direct hit from mid on by Dimuth Karunaratne, but Burns will know there was no need to take that single on.

Amazing camera work of the fishermen at work in the bay just behind the ground, hundreds of leaping fish through the surf. Superb stuff.

Sri Lanka have won five of their last six matches in Galle but it looks a long, long way back from here.

England's lead is approaching 200 but then...
