Today's objective for England is to bat patiently and show discipline but you have to scratch your head at how they have gone about it. Rory Burns has not had a great game, he was tied in knots by Dilruwan Perera, he was trying to get away from strike and was run out. Why do you do that?

Moeen, dear me. Out first ball in the first innings and now he's drilled one to mid-on. What was that? You are batting at three, you are trying to nail the game down.

Both teams think that this pitch is a minefield and it isn't, it plays perfectly well.

    Jennings 60, Stokes 14

Keaton Jennings played really well before lunch but he has had one lifeline.

He survived a big lbw appeal from the Sri Lanka bowler and fielders earlier.

The umpire shook his head and the hosts chose against a review but the replays showed the ball hit pad first and the ball would have gone on to hit the stumps.

He's still there though. Can he go big?

He and Stokes are now making their way to the middle for the afternoon session.

    England fans

Sri Lanka support may be massively outnumbered here in Galle again today, but there is a wonderful atmosphere in a special tent reserved for local schoolkids.

There are hundreds of youngsters enjoying the action, banging on drums and shaking tambourines.

What is especially nice is how the England fans are interacting with the school kids. The youngsters love to practice their English chatting to the tourists and there has been plenty of banter about Sri Lanka’s position in the game.

Sri Lanka great Kumar Sangakkara is also here today. Hopefully there’ll be another Kumar somewhere in that School tent.

  4. Anderson punished for dissent to umpirepublished at 07:05 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2018

We have official confirmation that England bowler Jimmy Anderson has been reprimanded for dissent towards umpire Chris Gaffaney yesterday.

    The ICC say:

"The incident happened in the 39th over of Sri Lanka’s innings when Anderson showed dissent by first complaining at the umpire’s decision and then throwing the ball into the pitch after he had received a first warning from umpire Chris Gaffaney for running on the wicket."

Anderson has been given one demerit point, taking his total to two. Four means you are banned for a Test.

England have taken their lead to 250 at lunch but the tourists have not had it all their own way this morning.

    They lost three wickets.

Rory Burns, Moeen Ali and Joe Root are all out.

Burns and Moeen's dismissals were not good. Burns ran himself out for 23 and then Moeen tamely chipped spinner Perera to mid-on for three.

Root followed soon after, also for three, but he was less to blame for his dismissal. He got a good delivery from Rangana Herath.

England opener Keaton Jennings is holding firm. He has passed 50 for the first time in a Test since 2016. Ben Stokes is alongside him.

Keaton Jennings is not every England fan's favourite batsman but he has been very good in this Test.

Today he has batted calmly and maturely.

He has been watchful when necessary and his hit just the one boundary today.

At lunch he is 60 not out.

The half-century is his first since his second Test against India back in December 2016.

Jonny: Good enough by England without completely dominating. Another 73-3 session after lunch would make the game safe. Sri Lanka trying hard but haven't quite got what they need to rip through the middle order...

Rory Burns ran himself out in a totally unnecessary way when he had the chance to bat all day.

He was clearly being tied up in knots by Sri Lanka spinner Perera surviving a tight lbw decision and he pushed to mid-on trying to get away from the strike.

Frankly I’ve no idea what Moeen was doing. No idea what was going through his mind and this only makes his tenure at number three look even more short-term than it did in the first place.

England continued with their the controversial 'Moeen Ali at number three' experiment this morning and I bet if he plays any more shots like the one that cost him his wicket then it won't last much longer.

He had faced 11 balls and had scored three runs when he just chipped spinner Dilruwan Perera in the air to Rangana Herath at mid-on.

    It really was not good.

Rory Burns will be disappointed with his dismissal this morning.

He had looked a little frenetic and didn't really settle into the innings.

    He then ran himself out.

He pushed the ball to mid-on and called for a run but a direct hit left him a yard short.

He was out for 23 and has not had the best of debuts. He was caught down the leg side on day one and yesterday took a nasty blow when fielding at short leg.

We will recap the morning in a second but we have some news from Galle.

It seems Jimmy Anderson is going to be punished for dissent towards umpire Chris Gaffaney yesterday.

Anderson was a little grumpy after being warned for walking on the pitch.

If we get official confirmation we will let you know.

That was probably Sri Lanka's session but England are still in a very strong position at lunch on day three.

They are effectively 250-3 in their second innings.

Well played Keaton Jennings. The England opener has batted out the first session as England come off on 111-3.

Everyone's pretty happy with that, bar David Shepherd.

Schedule me a meeting for Monday morning on 'How to use the reviews.'

Sri Lanka have made a dog's dinner of their reviews in this Test. Burned through both with two crazy calls in the first 12 overs of the first innings and now not reviewing a decision which would have sent Keaton Jennings back home.
