  1. Not outpublished at 45.4 overs

Nope, Sam Curran had his bat back by the time Dickwella took the stump out.

Had the Sri Lanka hesitated before removing the bails he would've got Curran there as the England all-rounder lost his balance and slid out of the crease.

Just as with his appeals, Dickwella was very keen and that cost him here.

Sam Curran's foot is back when the bails are dislodged.

    He then slides forward though.

Did Dickwella take the stump out of the ground in time?

Ooh Dilruwan is very close to over-stepping.

*Just* enough behind the line though.

    Fair delivery. The stumping next...

  4. Third umpirepublished at 45.4 overs

Dilruwan Perera gets dip, bounce and turn to draw Sam Curran out of his crease.

Niroshan Dickwella whips off the bails and then even removes the stump from the ground as he tries to stump the young Surrey all-rounder.

We'll need the third umpire to help clear this one up...

  5. Eng 170-6published at 45 overs

Jos Buttler pushes into the covers for the sole single off the over.

Simon Jones' injury at the Gabba in 2002-03 had a massive impact, especially because he was such a nice lad and you don't want that to happen to anyone. The way it happened was nasty.

Sliding doors moment: Simon Jones, the great pace hope, destroying his knee fielding on the boundary at the start of the Ashes tour. It was all downhill from that point.

    We'll always have this, though...

Sheeesh. Dilruwan Perera is causing havoc from round the wicket to the left-handers.

He gets two balls in a row to bite past Sam Curran's outside edge.

Ben Willmott: The sliding door moment in the 2005 Ashes that no one talks about: Michael Clarke unnecessarily shied at the stumps at Edgbaston 1st innings - 4 runs conceded. Neither bowler nor batsman changed ends so very little consequence in play... Except Eng won by 2 runs.

The picture below bears no resemblance to the above text but it's a great, great picture.

Three singles from the over as Buttler and Curran start England's latest rebuild.

    Time for drinks.

  12. Eng 165-6published at 42 overs

New man Sam Curran blocks out his first three balls.

No spike on the technology. Ben Foakes would have been given not out if he'd reviewed.

Not what England needed. It will be tough to bat out the day from here.

Oh. Ben Foakes was looking assured but now he's out.

A bit of an odd dismissal - Foakes goes for the sweep and perhaps gets a slight bottom edge on it into his pad, then off wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella's pad and into the hands of Dhanajaya de Silva at slip.

Sri Lanka celebrate and Foakes doesn't go at first so they turn to umpire S Ravi in appeal and, after quite a lengthy deliberation, he gives it out.

Foakes walks off, opting against the review. But replays suggest he might not have actually hit it...

  14. What you've missedpublished at 08:03 Greenwich Mean Time 14 November 2018

Welcome to those of you with an 08:00 alarm. I'm very jealous. Here's what's happened...

    • England won the toss and elected to bat
    • Keaton Jennings' flaws against pace returned - the opener prodding uncertainly at Suranga Lakmal to be caught behind for one
    • Ben Stokes played well in his new number three position before he missed a sharp turner to be out lbw on review
    • Joe Root defended loosely, leaving a gap between bat and pad to be bowled by slow left-armer Malinda Pushpakumara
    • Rory Burns hit a Test-best 43 before he nicked Akila Dananjaya to slip
    • Jos Buttler has counter-attacked brilliantly, sweeping and reverse-sweeping with aplomb to bring up a 50 off as many balls

Niiiice. Ben Foakes rocks back and bashes a cut shout away to the fence off Malinda Pushpakumara.

An assured start to his innings so far.

That didn't look quite right for lbw.

    Simon knew all along though...

  17. Eng 158-5published at 40 overs

DRS is making a few people question reality today.

Jos Buttler survives an appeal for lbw as he misses trying to sweep a sharp turner from Dilruwan Perera.

After consideration, Sri Lanka decide against a review.

The first replay suggest that was a poor decision, with Buttler looking in trouble. But then ball tracking shows the ball was bouncing and biting past leg stump.

So a very good decision not to review!

The most obvious one of recent times is Shane Warne dropping Kevin Pietersen at The Oval. England would almost certainly have lost that match.

A mate of mine created an email address that included the phrase 'Warne dropped the Ashes' in honour of this moment.

England have clearly got a plan of sweeping, and it's the right plan on this surface. The thing I don't get is why Sri Lanka haven't cut those options off. This is not a traditional wicket that can have a traditional Test cricket field.

Ben Foakes has been watching Jos Buttler from the dressing room.

He brings out the sweep and picks up four.
